Among the many sun-shaped flowers, pyrethrum or Persian chamomile occupies one of the first places in beauty, brightness of buds, and unpretentiousness. Openwork, juicy greens set off large raspberry-pink inflorescences. How to make friends with a fiery plant?

Biological features

Persian chamomile belongs to the large Asteraceae family. Brightly colored representatives are included in the variety - pink pyrethrum.

Powerful perennial roots of a fibrous structure lie in the upper soil layer. Openwork, strongly dissected greenery is collected in bulk in basal rosettes. Single small leaves climb in the next order up the entire stem.

Large inflorescences of a basket with a diameter of 6-10 cm are crowned with erect shoots 60-70 cm long. They consist of two types of flowers: long-reed brightly colored (pink, crimson, red, white), small yellow tubular structures in the center. The buds bloom gradually from June to July.

The seeds ripen at the end of August. The brown elongated achenes with ribs are crowned with a toothed crown. The shelf life of the seed is 2-3 years. 1 gram contains about 400 grains.

Growing conditions

Feels great in sunny areas. Put up with light partial shade. In a dense shade, the stems stretch out, lie down without a garter, the flowers become smaller. Feverfew is frost-resistant.

It grows in any soil. Luxurious bushes are formed on nutritious, well-drained soil. In humid places with a heavy substrate, the superficial root system is affected by rot, it gets wet during rains. Terry varieties are distinguished by increased sensitivity. After a rainy autumn, they often freeze out.

Varieties

Wild forms were cultivated 200 years ago. As a result of the painstaking work of breeders on the selection of beautiful specimens from the natural form, a group was obtained under the general name of hybrid feverfew. This includes varieties with simple and double inflorescences.

The most widespread are:

• James Kelway. The height of the stems reaches 60 cm. Scarlet baskets with a diameter of 6 cm. The buds bloom from the second decade of June for 1, 5 months.

• Atrosanguinea. Raspberry-red inflorescences crown 60 cm shoots from mid-June to late July.

• Robinsons mix. A mixture of pink-red huge baskets up to 12 cm in diameter. The stems are powerful, 75-80 cm high. Blooms in June - July.

• Troubadour. A variety of domestic selection, a mixture of colors of white, red, pink. The diameter of the daisies is 6 cm.

• Scarlet Star. High stems 80 cm adorn the first half of summer with dark scarlet inflorescences 12 cm in diameter.

• Vanessa. Densely double variety of a bright pink shade with a yellow convex middle, bushes 30-40 cm high.

Every year the collection is replenished with new selection achievements. The modern generation of "daisies" is becoming more beautiful than the previous ones.

Landscape design

Persian chamomile is excellent for cutting bouquet arrangements. In a complex mixborder, it goes well with yarrow, tansy, bells, nyvian, doronicum. Bright colors of large inflorescences of oriental poppy will emphasize the graceful greenery of pyrethrum with pink baskets.

Looks spectacular against the background of green shrubs in group plantings, next to openwork cosmos. On flower beds, tall varieties are excellent supporting partners for low perennials: pansies, stonecrop, daisies, bergenia, irises.

It goes well with annual flowers: petunia, marigolds, alyssum, ageratum, dahlias "Merry guys", lavatera. Tall bushes of pyrethrum are used to cover sewers, cesspools, compost heaps.

We will consider the propagation of Persian chamomile in the next article.
