Flaming Adonis (lat. Adonis flammea) - a herbaceous annual plant with fiery flower petals from the genus Adonis (lat. Adonis), which is part of the Buttercup family (lat. Ranunculaceae). Thin pinnately dissected green leaves of the plant create an openwork background, against which flower petals stand out with a scarlet flame. A very spectacular plant, worthy of decorating any flower garden. In addition, the above-ground parts of the fiery Adonis have healing powers.

What's in your name

The origins of the Latin name of the genus "Adonis" should be sought in mythology. True, as to who exactly became the "prototype" of the name, it is impossible to find unanimity in different sources. Some associate the name with the Assyrian gods, referring to a god named Adon, while others believe that the reason for this name was the myths of Ancient Greece.

If we follow the path of ancient Greek myths, it turns out that the red color of the petals of the "Fiery Adonis" was given by the blood of Adonis, who was killed during the hunt. He was the son of a king and was distinguished by irresistible beauty, for which earthly girls and heavenly goddesses sighed. One of them was Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who hid a bleeding youth among the flowers. The drops of blood were the dye for the petals of Adonis. But, scarlet petals of some plant species of the genus Anemone, also belonging to the Buttercup family, are also attributed to the same drops of blood. For example, the view "Anemone (or Anemone) crown". Scarlet roses are also ranked here. Apparently, Aphrodite hid Adonis in a flower bed, on which many different plants grew, which managed to absorb a particle of the handsome man's blood, presenting her scarlet beauty to sinful people today.

This species was first described in 1776 by the Austrian botanist, Nikolaus von Jacquin (1727-02-16 - 1817-10-24).

Description

Adonis fiery is a very spectacular plant with a height of twenty-five to forty centimeters.

The erect stem can be simple, or slightly branched. The surface of the stem is furrowed, has a slight pubescence of whitish hairs.

Decorative leaves seem to weave thin lace with their linear slices, into which nature has cut the leaf plate. Slight pubescence adds to the picturesque leaves. Bushes with carved foliage outwardly somewhat resemble conifers such as cypresses or junipers. Only in conifers, the leaf-scales are harsh, and the foliage of Adonis fiery is soft.

Single large flowers are the main attribute of the picturesque plant. Shiny scarlet petals with a slightly dissected rounded or pointed apex are freely located in a calyx of accrete sepals, elegantly pubescent with hairs. Longitudinal thin veins give the petals a special charm. In the center of the flower, numerous stamens with yellow anthers stick out, forming a spectacular hemisphere and breaking the monotony of the red color.

The fruits of the plant are cylindrical nuts with a funny tail, a dense family located at the top of the stem.

The healing abilities of the plant

Like Adonis vernalis, Adonis fiery is recognized by official medicine as a medicine that helps to correct various disturbances in the work of the heart. In addition, preparations from Adonis fiery help to cope with insomnia, calm the nervous system. But when it comes to the main "motor" of a person, the heart, then you should not self-medicate, but it is much more effective to carry out treatment under the supervision of a doctor. After all, one must always remember that a medicine differs from a poison in the correct, dosed and controlled use.

Use in the garden

External beauty, preference for coolness, drought resistance and unpretentious care make Adonis fiery a desirable garden plant.

The unpretentiousness of the plant does not negate the usual procedures: watering, fertilizing, loosening or mulching.
