Raspberry curl

Raspberry curl is the most harmful disease after mosaic. You can meet her wherever raspberries are grown. Sometimes the ill-fated virus is capable of infecting blackberries as well. The yield of fragrant raspberry berries as a result of kinkiness is reduced by about 20 - 40%. As a rule, raspberries attacked by curly hair die within four years. The situation is noticeably complicated by the fact that viral ailments are practically not amenable to treatment. Therefore, it will be more expedient to make every effort to prevent the occurrence of curl than to try unsuccessfully to treat it later

A few words about the disease

The root growth of raspberry bushes infected with curl differs little from the root growth of healthy bushes. However, its stems are still more stocky, thickened and shorter.

The symptoms of harmful curliness are most clearly manifested on the leaves, which become smaller, shriveled and tough with a slight bronze tint. Especially often, such an ebb can be observed on the undersides of the leaves. And leaf veins in most cases become vitreous. The apical leaves in the year of infection often curl downward, and in the following spring they become slightly yellowish and strongly curly.

Fruiting lateral shoots are usually shortened, and their proliferation in the form of rosettes is also periodically observed. The growing new shoots are quite numerous, dwarf and branch from the leaf sinuses. And the fruit brushes of raspberries look ugly, while the berries become sour, small, crooked and dry. Deformed inflorescences often do not form berries at all.

Curl is a viral disease caused by a very dangerous virus. There are many options for its distribution. It can be transferred when pruning healthy crops with infected crops at the same time, especially if no intermediate disinfection of the instrument used for such pruning is carried out. Often, the ill-fated virus is also transmitted with planting material (in the case of raspberries, this is a root shoot), at the stage of grafting infected cuttings onto healthy crops, with sap of infected vegetation, as well as numerous herbivorous mites and sucking insects attacking raspberry plantings (aphids stand alone here).

The most susceptible to curliness are raspberry varieties such as Lloyd George, Kaliningradskaya, Otbornaya Sheyna, Marlborough, Latham, Novosty Kuzmina, Spirinskaya, Angliyskaya and Cuthbert.

How to fight

Basically, all measures against curliness are more aimed at prevention than at getting rid of this scourge. Planting material must always be of high quality and healthy (ideally, these are varieties resistant to curliness), and quarantine measures must be strictly observed. To prevent the spread of a harmful disease, vegetation must be systematically treated against annoying sucking insects. Aphid control is especially important for the prevention of curl, as these harmful parasites are very active in carrying the virus.

Raspberry bushes with signs of curliness found on them should be promptly uprooted and immediately burned. In addition to them, the wild raspberries growing nearby should also be destroyed, if of course there is one, since it is an excellent refuge for both the carriers of the virus and the virus itself.

In order to reduce populations of harmful insects carrying the curl virus, it would also be advisable to use various insecticides.

It is noteworthy that sometimes there are cases of spontaneous and unexpected recovery of raspberry bushes (as a rule, this occurs at field temperatures). However, this happens very rarely.

And, alas, there are currently no options for completely getting rid of such a dangerous viral ailment as curliness.
