Ulcerative spotting of raspberry stems is most often found in the southeastern part of Russia. In addition to raspberries, it often attacks roses with blackberries. This condition is also known as raspberry stem cancer. Such an unpleasant attack leads to the death of fruiting branches and, accordingly, to a decrease in yield. And berries collected from diseased raspberry bushes are of rather low quality. The ill-fated ulcerative spot is especially widespread in old plantings and in areas located near wild raspberry thickets
A few words about the disease
On shoots affected by ulcerative spotting, the appearance of depressed spots begins, which have an irregular and slightly elongated shape and are painted in brownish tones. Gradually expanding, they brighten, acquiring a grayish tint. The edges of the spots rise slightly, and cracks form in the grooves that appear. And on the entire surface of the spots, you can observe scattered convex black spots of sporulation of the fungus - pycnidia. All of them are spherical, painted black and endowed with tiny papillary stomata.
The tissues of the shoots in the places where the spots are formed gradually begin to collapse, splitting in the longitudinal direction and acquiring a somewhat worn out appearance. All lesions are similar in appearance to sores, along the edges of which small tumors can sometimes form. Fruiting shoots and leaves turn yellow and dry out quickly enough.
The causative agent of ulcerative spotting of raspberry stems is a harmful fungus that overwinters in the tissues of the affected shoots in the form of mycelium. Most often, it develops on dead raspberry shoots as a saprophyte, however, under very favorable conditions, it also easily affects live raspberry stems. In most cases, an unpleasant ailment is transmitted with planting material.
To a large extent, the development of ulcerative spotting is facilitated by increased humidity. This unpleasant ailment develops much more strongly on both clogged and overly thickened areas. Damage from insects, as well as all kinds of mechanical damage, can significantly facilitate the penetration of fungal spores into plants. As a rule, the ill-fated ulcerative spotting reaches its maximum development with the onset of July.
A harmful fungus affects up to half of the raspberry stems, and also destroys the bast and even gets to the wood. Unfortunately, raspberry varieties that are resistant to ulcerative spotting have not yet been successfully developed.
How to fight
Before planting raspberry seedlings, infected specimens should be carefully discarded, since ulcerative spotting is perfectly transmitted with planting material. All seedlings used for planting must be healthy. Also, in no case should excessive thickening of berry plantings be allowed - raspberry bushes must be systematically thinned out.
All berry bushes must be carefully examined during the growing season. Found infected shoots must be promptly cut off and immediately burned. And after the harvest of juicy berries is completely harvested, the sprouted shoots are also cut off and eliminated from the plots.
If, nevertheless, the ailment struck the raspberry plantings, it is recommended to carry out several sprays with Bordeaux liquid (one percent necessarily). The first spraying is carried out in the spring, as soon as the young shoots grow up to about fifteen to thirty centimeters, the second - before the raspberries bloom, and the third - when the berries are fully harvested. Also used for spraying are drugs such as "Skor", "Abiga-Peak", "Previkur", "Ordan", "Fundazol", "Ridomil Gold", "Acrobat" and "Profit Gold".
In the fight against ulcerative spotting, it is also allowed to use methods used against a number of other fungal diseases of raspberries.
