Experienced gardeners are well aware that in order to get a good harvest of potatoes, it is not enough to plant tubers in the beds and wait for them to multiply as if by magic. Summer begins the hot season of caring for our second bread: loosening, hilling and, if necessary, watering
We follow the weather forecast
June often surprises with frosts. And for those who are engaged in the cultivation of potatoes, it is important to keep an eye on the weather forecasts. If sharp drops of the thermometer are expected, and seedlings have already appeared, they need to be piled high - so that the tops are hidden. Such an agricultural practice will not only protect from freezing, but also contribute to a significant increase in the early harvest, especially when the land is wet.
If the plants are not protected from cold snaps and the seedlings will freeze, the mother tubers are able to give new sprouts. But you won't have to count on an early harvest. The potato will stagnate and its quantity will be markedly reduced.
Weeds don't belong here
The worst enemy of potatoes is weeds. As a preventive measure against the appearance of weeds, it is useful to harrow the soil even before the emergence of potatoes. This technique will not allow the remaining rhizomes, wind-swept seeds, to germinate and gain a foothold in the wintering in the upper layers of the soil.
From the moment potatoes are planted, the soil is harrowed after 5-7 days and continues to do this regularly until the seedlings reach a height of about 10 cm. The frequency of loosening depends both on the composition of the soil and on weather conditions - precipitation. Choose your mode individually, focusing on the density of the formation of the soil crust and the speed of germination of weeds. When weeding, small weeds do not need to be removed from the beds, because they are completely covered with soil by rakes, they soon die from exhaustion, and on the surface of the soil they simply dry out.
About the benefits of hilling
The harrowing and loosening of the soil is replaced by the time of hilling. This procedure cannot be neglected, since in the ridge created around the stems, the water-air regime optimal for the development of the root system is formed. In such a mound, the soil is less crumpled and compacted, there is no excess moisture. In addition, in this way, the stem gains reliable support, which increases its resistance to lodging.
When to start hilling? As soon as possible! This will help stimulate the emergence of new roots, stolons and more tubers. It is very important to have time to huddle the beds before flowering, during the budding period. Experienced gardeners begin this work, as soon as the sprouts have reached 10-12 cm in height. It is useful to carry out this procedure several times.
Late hilling is not recommended. At the beginning of flowering potatoes, such work can harm the plants. During this period, the roots and stolons are located close to the surface of the earth and can be damaged by inaccurate movements.
Water procedures
It is useful to hilling after precipitation. Sticking to the stem of moist soil stimulates the formation of roots and stolons, which means the appearance of more tubers. It also helps to retain moisture in the soil. On average, to collect 1 kg of young tubers, a plant consumes about 100 liters of water over the entire development period. The need for water in the early stages of growth is not so pronounced. But drought will not be good either. Therefore, if the weather outside is dry within a month after planting, the beds must be watered.
Potatoes consume the most moisture during the flowering period. However, drought affects the future harvest most of all during bud formation. It is at this moment that the phase of laying secondary roots and the appearance of stolons occurs.
