Growing large, healthy, beautiful garlic with good keeping quality is a whole art. But it is not difficult to learn it, with due attention to planting, the foliage will not turn yellow, and the heads will grow wonderfully! Consider what needs to be considered when choosing planting material, how to plant and what care the beds require. This is an unpretentious culture, but there should be plenty of garlic on the farm
What the bottom will tell you about
Every gardener knows that the quality of the planting material is of great importance for the future harvest. And when choosing garlic for planting, it is important to pay attention not only to the fact that the head is dense, large, but also to carefully examine the bottom. Today, it is easy to find good, firm garlic onions on sale. At the same time, an even and smooth bottom is not an advantage, but rather a lack of planting material. Because this suggests that it was most likely treated with special compounds so that the garlic does not germinate over the winter and does not deteriorate during storage. For use as a planting material, you need to take garlic with outlined root tubercles.
It is also necessary to inspect the bottom for rot, mold. When it is present on only one side and has spread only one or two teeth, this does not mean that the rest is healthy, and you can use it for planting. The bottom of the garlic is uniform, and the infection with a high probability has already lurked in each clove, it just has not yet manifested itself visually. The same can be said about the onions, where the bottom looks healthy, but individual teeth are already squeezed - it is better to put these specimens aside and take only the best heads for planting. Decaying planting material can yield a crop, but it will also quickly become affected by diseases, and already in the garden.
Teeth can also deteriorate from mechanical damage - from blows, cuts on a sharp shovel, etc. When there are doubts about the quality of such planting material, it is better to work hard again, remove the scales and inspect the teeth.
Planting garlic in the garden in spring
Planting chives should be carried out in pre-prepared holes. They are made at a distance of approximately 7-8 cm from each other. The planting material is embedded in the ground to a depth of about 2-3 cm, pushing it with the thumb into the hole. If planted too close to the surface of the soil, they will suffer from a lack of nutrition, because the top layers of the earth dry out very quickly.
Spring care for sub-winter garlic plantings
In the spring, garlic planted before winter requires attention. Often the gardener observes such a picture as the yellowing of the leaves of this garlic. This is a symptom of a lack of nitrogen or potassium in the soil. In order not to bring the planting to such a state, the beds must be fed in a timely manner. To do this, apply:
• root dressing - ammonium nitrate solution;
• foliar dressing - potassium sulfate solution.
To carry out root dressing, the soil must first be loosened. Then, in the aisles, arrange grooves into which fertilizers are distributed from a watering can. After that, the grooves are back filled with dry earth. Such a technique will save the solution from evaporation, and the nutrients will go for their intended purpose.
Foliar dressing is carried out with a weak aqueous solution of potassium sulfate. To do this, the leaves are sprayed with a nutritious liquid using a spray bottle.
Fertilizers are available in various forms. If purchased in granules, it may not be enough just to stir them in water. In order for the nutrients to dissolve well, seasoned gardeners are advised to let the composition stand for a while, otherwise they will be poorly absorbed.
