Indoor cucumbers need a garter. There are different methods and means for this. Let's talk about the most effective fixing methods based on the advice of experienced gardeners

Why do you need to tie cucumbers in a greenhouse

It is known that the harvest in greenhouse conditions ripens 1-1.5 months faster. Cultivation success depends on adherence to cultivation rules. The garter is the most important agricultural activity.

As a result, you simplify all the care processes: watering, shaping a bush, feeding, picking cucumbers. Eliminate the development of fungal infections. A correctly executed garter increases collection by 40%.

If you abandon vertical cultivation or carry out the garter incorrectly, your cucumbers will suffer from a lack of light, the development of infections, some of the inflorescences will not be pollinated, which will lead to the discharge of buds. During the ripening process, the cucumbers will have contact with the ground, which contributes to the onset of decay and the attack of parasites.

The sun warms up the earth and the plant, which promotes rapid growth and proper development. And also you exclude thickening of the lashes. Cucumbers are not held by the adjacent stem, but by the support. And most importantly, the planting density increases: the interval between the bushes is at least 30 cm.

When and how to tie cucumbers

With a garter, it is better not to tighten and do not allow the moment of the escape to fall to the ground. The event is held when the plant has reached 30-35 cm, that is, 20-30 days after germination (5-6 leaves). For convenience, experienced gardeners install the support even before sowing / planting. In the greenhouse, you can tie it up in any way. It is still advisable to take into account the height of the roof and the variety of cucumber.

Horizontal garter

It is used in low greenhouses. Two rods of reinforcement, two pillars or two wooden stakes are installed on the garden bed. A wire, synthetic twine or strong twine is pulled between them in several rows, with an interval of 30-35 cm. The number of horizontal guides depends on the height of the structure. The first "step" should be 20 cm from the ground.

The cucumber is fixed with tendrils and guided along the horizontal support. The lateral processes move to the next step, and so on.

Vertical garter

Ideal for tall greenhouses (over 2 meters). It is created using a frame made of metal, plastic, wood. The lower bar is located on the ground, the upper one reaches the greenhouse ceiling. The middle consists of guides that are attached to hooks or tied to the frame. They are made from ropes, wire, twine. The number of vertical stretch marks corresponds to the planted plants: one rope for each cucumber.

Omitting difficulties, many put on the ground an "anchor" in the form of an iron pipe or bar and tie the bottom of the rope to it, and the top to the frame of the greenhouse. You can also omit this point and tie the string to the stem above the second leaf. In this case, the garter is made with a slack, the upper end is tied with a loop or a sliding knot. The tension is adjusted as it grows.

There is another option, instead of ropes, a garden net is pulled. The lower part is fixed to the ground with pins or an "anchor", the upper one on the greenhouse ceiling or on a horizontal bus, with a slight slope. Some people install a wooden rack and pinion "ladder".

Advice. So that the cucumbers do not shade the space, when they reach the ceiling, pinching the crown is done. When lateral shoots grow back, they are attached to the main rope or tied with a separate cord.

The material for fastening depends on the method of the garter. In any case, when covering the stem, do not tighten the fasteners tightly, otherwise the stem will be damaged. For the horizontal method, wire, rope, and less often plastic are used. For vertical fastening - cord and twine.

The most convenient is the synthetic polypropylene twine Tex 1000 or 1200. It is durable and moisture resistant, so it is suitable for both methods of fastening. After use, it will have to be removed from the lashes, since it cannot be put into compost - it does not decompose.

Jute Cord Stocker is made of natural fibers and is biodegradable. Sold in various thicknesses, usually in rolls of 50-100 meters. Suitable for vertical mounting only. The disadvantage is swelling, sagging.

If you decide to use a garden mesh, choose a large mesh of 15-20 cm or buy a ready-made trellis. There are a variety of gadgets in stores today, including stem holders, locking clips, flexors, and more.

Advice. You cannot take a paper cord or twine to tie cucumbers. It will quickly collapse from water and tear.

So, when tying, you ensure the convenience of collection, increase the conditions for pollination, prevent the stems from “strangling”, and get more high-quality cucumbers.
