Pumpkin is a wonderful and healthy vegetable, which is often used in dietary nutrition, due to its special properties to have a beneficial effect on the body. Growing it does not require too much effort from the summer resident. The weight of the fruits of this vegetable can reach up to fifty kilograms
Types of pumpkins
In our country, three types of pumpkins are most common: nutmeg, hard-barked (ordinary) and large-fruited (giant). The main distinguishing feature of all three is the structure of the peduncle. Large-fruited pumpkin is characterized by a rounded cylindrical stalk. The color can be very different. Such pumpkin varieties are very resistant to frost and sharp drops in temperature. Seeds begin to germinate at twelve degrees Celsius.
Over the past few years, nutmeg pumpkins have become increasingly popular in cultivation in Russian dachas. The stalk of such a culture is similar in shape to the Eiffel Tower, since the part adjacent to the fruit is very expanded. The vegetables themselves have a ribbed texture and a somewhat elongated shape. Fruits of a greenish hue with white stripes, as well as yellow-beige, are considered ripe here.
Hard-bore pumpkins have scars in the structure of the stalk, between which there are noticeable grooves. Probably every summer resident has come across the cultivation of zucchini, zucchini or squash. They belong to the hard-bore type of pumpkin fruit. By the way, some gardeners also grow decorative types of pumpkins on their plots. They have only an aesthetic function, as they take on original shapes and beautiful colors.
Requirements for growing pumpkin
Pumpkin is a vegetable that loves warmth and good weather very much. For sowing seeds, it is initially required to wait for high-quality soil warming up to at least fifteen degrees. Pumpkin feels great even in thirty-degree heat in summer. During the growing season, the formation of a large aboveground part is observed. The length of the lashes can be five to seven meters. Additional root processes are formed on them. Despite such a love for warmth and sun, pumpkin adapts just as well in shaded areas.
It is most correct to plant pumpkin in places where early tomatoes, potatoes or cabbage were grown earlier. On the site itself, the pumpkin is sown late. Therefore, radishes or greens can be grown in this area prior to planting the pumpkin. When planting climbing varieties, two or four bushes should be planted along the fence. Since the pumpkin will cling to the supports, it will create a beautiful decorative green wall.
The soil for planting pumpkins must be nutritious and fertile. Since the fall, the garden has been ennobled by fertilizing. Be sure to feed the plants with compost, humus or humus in the proportion of two buckets per square meter of planting. You should also add nitrophosphate in the form of fifty to sixty grams per square meter.
Pumpkin plants are planted on the site after May 15, when the earth temperature will be more than fifteen degrees. A square-nest scheme is suitable for planting. A distance of half a meter must be maintained between plants and rows. The seeds are deepened by three to four centimeters, placing 1-2 pieces in one hole. When seedlings form, it will be necessary to destroy the weakened plants.
Basic principles of care
The most important thing is to keep the garden with the pumpkin planted on it clean, in a timely manner destroying weeds. It is regularly required to loosen the soil. Watering, fertilization and pest control are also needed. Already formed pumpkin fruits should not lie on the surface of the soil, but on a special bedding material. Many gardeners use cardboard for this.
The first feeding of the pumpkin is carried out at a time when the sprouts have three to five leaves. Under the root, 7-10 grams of nitrophoska is required. In the case of moistened soil, the fertilizer must be buried in a layer of five to seven centimeters by loosening. At the same time, in dry soil, after top dressing, you need to water the soil. The plants are fed the second time after the formation of lashes. Nitrophoska is placed in an amount of ten to fifteen grams under the bush, after which the soil is watered.
It is best to water the pumpkins not by the plants themselves, but by the aisle. But the moisture must be abundant so that the water completely soaks the soil. At the beginning of development, the soil of the pumpkin must be mulched. Do not pour cold water on the pumpkin. The optimum temperature is twenty degrees Celsius. Also, before watering, you should weed the beds and remove all weeds.
