Not all foods are recommended to be stored together. Some neighborhood can only harm. Subject to certain rules and nuances, you can extend the shelf life of products
In order for vegetables and fruits to please with their freshness for a long time, you need to store them correctly. Some of them should be placed separately from each other. Otherwise, the process of their maturation is activated, which means that they will deteriorate faster. Here are some useful tips and tricks:
1. Storing cucumbers
Many fresh vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes) emit ethylene gas, which makes them ripen quickly. Cucumbers are highly susceptible to ethylene, so it is advisable to store them so that ripening does not accelerate. Better to put them in a dark, cool place out of the sun. The bag with cucumbers does not need to be tightly closed to allow them to breathe and ethylene to escape. When stored in the refrigerator, cucumbers should not come into close contact with other vegetables and fruits.
2. Fresh herbs for seasoning dishes
Freshly cut herbs used as a seasoning are usually kept in the refrigerator. First, it is washed, dried and packed in airtight containers or plastic bags. Greens should also be stored separately from other foods.
It is convenient to place herbs in jars of water and cover them with plastic bags or damp gauze. You must first remove the dry leaves and cut the end of the stem a little. This way you can store fresh herbs for about two weeks, constantly renewing the water. Basil is stored in water at room temperature.
3. Zucchini and pumpkins, apples and pears
Pumpkins should not be stored next to apples and pears. The optimum storage temperature for them should be 10-13 ° C, and the shelf life should be from 3 to 6 months.
4. Root vegetables and apples
Each type of root vegetable (potatoes, carrots, beets and onions) has its own storage rules. But it is important not to lump them together, but to store them in separate containers. Apples, which emit ethylene gas, can accelerate their spoilage. In addition, apples absorb odors well and may lose their natural taste.
5. Storage of berries
Plucked and washed fresh berries do not lie for a long time - they are covered with mold. Therefore, it is recommended not to wash the berry before use. If you need to keep it for several days, you can immerse the berries in a specially prepared solution of water (3 glasses) and vinegar 9% (glass). Vinegar will keep the berries from mold. They are watered with a solution, put in a colander. It is then dried on a paper towel and placed in a container or box with openings for air circulation. They should also be stored separately from other vegetables and fruits.
6. Apples and oranges
It is undesirable to store these fruits nearby in the refrigerator, because both apples and oranges actively emit ethylene gas, which negatively affects their condition and shelf life.
7. Bananas
Bananas ripen quickly, especially in a bunch. Therefore, they must be stored separately, wrapping their tails with cling film. It is good to put them in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process. But don't be upset if one of the bananas is too ripe: its pulp will make a great face mask.
8. Potatoes and onions
You cannot store potatoes with onions so that they come into contact - the beneficial properties of vegetables are lost. They can be individually folded into baskets with ventilation holes and placed in a cool, dark place. You can use paper bags or cardboard boxes for storage.
9. Bananas and avocados
Unripe avocados can be placed with bananas, which give off a ripening gas. If you need to slow down ripening, store the avocado in the refrigerator in an airtight container with a small onion in it.
10. Storing tomatoes
It is not recommended to store fresh tomatoes in the refrigerator - they become soft and tasteless, lose their nutritional properties, but the growth of harmful bacteria slows down in the cold. Therefore, you can put tomatoes in the refrigerator, but no more than two to three days.
11. Celery and asparagus
When storing celery, it is important that it does not lose its crispy texture or become soft. It is recommended to store celery separately from other vegetables by wrapping it in aluminum foil. To prevent it from losing its juices, it can be cut into strips, placed in a hermetically sealed container, filled with water and refrigerated.
The asparagus will survive better if you remove the fibrous ends and set the stems in water in a tall glass.
12. Storing corn
It is most useful to place corn in the refrigerator, but it is not recommended to keep it there for a long time. Do not store corn in paper or plastic bags. It is better to put it on the shelves located in the refrigerator door - the air temperature there is not as low as inside.
