Food moth, grain moth - even if it does not eat a bag of buckwheat or oatmeal, it can spoil the product. The moth and its larva appear in dry bulk products during long-term storage. It is not very dangerous for health. But, you see, it is not pleasant to eat food with moths and worms. How can you protect yourself from this misfortune? There are ways, and quite simple ones
Why does a mole start up in the cereal
The first thing that experts advise so that moths do not start in food:
• firstly, carefully inspect the bag with cereals when buying, whether you can see insects, their larvae or waste products through the transparent packaging;
• secondly - do not buy too much food, you need to take as much as you can eat in the next two to three months.
It is important to understand that even if no insects were found during the initial examination, the larvae may still be contained in the cereal. Special conditions are created in warehouses and granaries and a certain temperature is maintained at which parasites from eggs are not born, and mold does not appear. But getting into our warm and humid kitchens, favorable conditions arise for both. Therefore, housewives need to strike a preemptive blow on pests in order to prevent moths or mold from showing up in all their glory.
How to protect cereals from moths
There are two effective ways to prevent the development of larvae and the appearance of moths:
1. Freezing.
2. Warming up.
For example, pour the purchased oatmeal from the bag into a deep bowl and send it to the freezer. Experts advise keeping the product in the freezer for at least 7 days. Although in practice it has been verified that two or three days are enough.
If it is necessary to carry out prevention in a shorter time, then you can ignite the cereals in a frying pan. Pest eggs die at 60 ° C, just a few minutes are enough for this.
Another rule is not to store cereals in the bags in which they were packaged at the time of sale. It is advisable to pour them into glass jars or plastic bottles with a wide neck. And throw a bay leaf at the bottom. It will repel pests.
At the same time, for long-term storage, it is undesirable to tightly close the jar with a nylon or iron lid. Make several holes in the nylon lid with a regular needle. Then air exchange will take place and the cereal will not deteriorate.
Moths and other insects can also appear in flour. And then spread to cereals. Therefore, it is recommended to sift the flour through a thick sieve.
How to prevent mold from forming
Mold can appear both from high humidity and from hermetically sealed packaging. Mold can affect not only cereals, but also flour, tea, and other dry bulk products.
First of all, flour will suffer from mold. Therefore, it is also undesirable to store it in small bags in which flour is bought by weight. It is good to keep flour in paper bags. Another storage method is with linen bags. It is not difficult to sew them yourself. And for reliability, it is recommended to pre-soak them in a strong saline solution. This is both disinfection and mold prevention. Salt absorbs excess moisture.
For more reliability, use this trick. Buy coarse rock salt, place one spoonful of salt in a tea infuser and dip it into a bag of flour. This "amulet" will also absorb excess moisture. Instead of a strainer, a miniature bag of gauze or bandage will come down.
High humidity can cause a musty smell in rice. To prevent it from appearing, a pod of dry bitter red pepper is kept in a jar or bag of rice.
Another tip for dealing with moisture is to pack salt into matchboxes, poke a dozen holes in them and place them in the corners of food cabinets. Throw there a couple of bay leaves.
