Fragrant racemose inflorescences of a bush called "Privet" are similar to the fragrant flower brushes of Lilac. This is no coincidence, because they are from the same Olive family. The only pity is that the black shiny fruits-berries of Privet are poisonous to humans, and are not filled with the edible pulp of ripe black-sided olives. But the branches of Privet are easily amenable to decorative haircuts, and therefore can replace the capricious boxwood when creating green sculptures at their summer cottage
General description of the genus Privet
Evergreen and deciduous, shrubs and low trees, filling with the aroma of white flowers, collected in racemose inflorescences; with opposite simple leaves sitting on short petioles; with berry-shaped fruit-seeds - these are all the characteristics of representatives of the flora of the genus Privet.
Varieties of Privet
•
Common privet (Ligustrum vulgare) is the most commonly grown species. It is a tall shrub that can be recumbent or erect, and sometimes grown as a tree. The leaves are simple, leathery, oval at the base of the branches, and stretching to their ends, turning into more elongated, lanceolate. From the May warming to the July heat, the bushes are covered with fragrant inflorescences, panicles, collected from small white flowers. The flowers turn into berries, which turn black as they ripen and adhere very tightly to the bushes, decorating them in late autumn. Unfortunately, berries are poisonous to humans.
•
Japanese privet (Ligustrum japonicum) is an evergreen upright shrub native to Japan and Korea. Dark green glossy oval leaves and panicle-inflorescences, collected from tubular white flowers, are his attire.
•
Privet light (Ligustrum lucidum) is an evergreen shrub that grows in the Far East. Its glossy leaves, like those of Japanese Privet, are oval and dark green in color. In late summer and early autumn, tubular white-cream flowers bloom.
•
Round-leaved privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) - The shrub that came from Japan behaves differently depending on the climatic zone of cultivation. In the temperate zone it is an evergreen shrub, in cold zones it partially loses its foliage, being considered semi-evergreen. Its appearance is characterized by the same oval glossy leaves and tubular flowers. The most widespread are two varieties: "Privet Motley", the leaves of which are white-cream or light yellow along the edge; "Privet Golden-Bordered", the leaves of which are yellow along the edge, and the bush itself is much more compact than that of the original botanical species.
Growing
Bushes are planted in open ground more often in the fall.
Its unpretentiousness to soils does not exclude the best results of cultivation on fertile soils, rich in organic matter.
Privet feels equally good in sunny and shaded places. In places with a frosty climate, bushes that are not covered with snow freeze under severe frosts.
Privet is drought-resistant, watering is required only for young, permanently planted plants.
Propagated by seeds, cuttings, layering and root suckers.
It is rarely affected by pests, but this also happens.
Usage
For its resistance to gas pollution in cities, gusts of wind, deposits of sea salt, Privet is very popular when creating parks and gardens in industrial and coastal cities. Sometimes it can be seen on terraces and balconies growing in containers.
It is planted on crumbling slopes to strengthen them.
Using her unpretentious attitude to the haircut and good bushiness after pruning, decorative green fences and garden sculptures are arranged from Privet.
Dry, broken, or erratic branches must be removed to maintain their appearance. Pruning is required only in the first years of life to shape the bush and maintain branching in the lower part.
