Oh, these rodents! As the autumn period comes, and after it the winter period, they enter into their own right of ownership of the areas of the dacha courtyard and winter supplies of the harvest. How to protect your plantings and supplies for the winter from the ubiquitous voracious rodents?
Poisoned bait
We will discuss here modern methods of disposal and those that have already become classic against rodents in the summer cottage and in the garden. The fact that it is necessary to fight rodents with improvised means, using both the simplest homemade ones, and chemical-toxic ones, and even modern gadgets - this is not even subject to discussion.
Here you can imagine a dozen minuses of the presence of rodents in the country, starting from damage to property and crops (what we do not take away and do not eat, we will bite and gnaw through), ending with the fact that rodents, field mice, rats and other individuals of this order are carriers of dangerous bacteria … By sowing crops, kitchen utensils and utensils in the country with their feces with a very unpleasant, by the way, pungent smell, rodents can poison our existence in a literal and figurative sense, expose us and our loved ones to serious diseases.
So, the classics of the genre of fighting rodents are poisoned baits. They can be commercially available products such as the well-proven Efa briquettes, others flavored, for example, with the smell of cheese, chocolates, which are very pleasant for mice. You can use other types of baits in the form of poisoned grain, sunflower seeds, granulated from cereals.
It is necessary to lay out such preparations in the habitats of mice (you can detect their presence in one place or another by mouse excrement), in the cellar, in the kitchen. You need to work, laying out the bait, only with gloves, which should then be thrown away.
With this method, there are the following dangers of its use. Mice on their paws can carry pesticides over the entire surface of, say, kitchen utensils, a table, in the cellar over vegetables and fruits. Therefore, if you decide to use this method, you need to prevent poisoning and contamination of objects and products with chemicals. Cover everything carefully, pack and so on. If a cat lives in the country, there is a danger that he will catch and eat an already infected, poisoned mouse. Therefore, this method will not work if there are pets in the house.
They ran aground, or rather, on glue …
In case, for some reason, you do not like the above-mentioned method against rodents, you can try the use of glue. Such glue does not dry - this time, it constantly retains its viscosity, even in cold weather.
The bait with glue is prepared as follows:
On sheets of cut cardboard, they put mouse bait in the center - grain, sunflower seeds, pieces of cheese, and more. Around the bait, glue from rodents is squeezed out of the tube with a closing ring and a fat layer. Such cartons are laid out in the cellar, in the attic, in the garden under the trees, under the kitchen table. Arriving at the dacha, you will notice that a lot of rodents have stuck to the bait.
Modern gadgets against rodents
If there is electricity in the country all year round, you should turn to gadgets that are completely safe for humans and animals and intolerable to rodents. Although there are models that run on rechargeable batteries or batteries. That is, the lack of power supply will not become an obstacle in this case. Such gadgets operate on the basis of ultrasound, which is unpleasant for mice, which drives them from the perimeter of the dacha or site, depending on how much of this perimeter the device can "capture" with its sound signals.
You should consult gadget sellers about this or that model of "ultracots", as they have different functions, different options for influencing rodents - noise, noiseless, light, and so on.
The good old mousetrap can be used if you are often or constantly at the dacha in the autumn and winter. Since it will be necessary very often for the first time, until deep snow falls, fill the mousetrap with bait, then take out the next mouse trap from it and cock it again for the next victim.
Protecting trees in the garden for the winter from rodents
By spreading the straw around the tree trunks, the owners of the gardens themselves thus beckon the mice to them. Mice, having enjoyed the grains caught from the straw, are taken for nibbling the bark of trees from below.
Therefore, it is better to cover the bole of each tree from autumn to winter and until spring. To do this, near each trunk, you should dig a groove or trench, insert a piece of roofing material or parchment into it from below, wrap the tree trunk with them. And tamp the trench tightly with your feet so that the animals do not get to the bottom of the tree trunk. If you are afraid for some plants, shrubs that can gnaw small animals in winter, wrap them in old nylon stockings. For some reason, rodents hate this material and do not undertake to gnaw it.
