Dahlias bloom no worse than roses, and some varieties even surpass in beauty the queen of the garden itself. Large flowers on tall stems adorn the garden before the arrival of severe frosts. But, unfortunately, not every grower manages to preserve this picturesque perennial. What mistakes can be made when digging out rhizomes, and how to avoid them so as not to ruin your luxurious flowers?
Conditions for migrants from warm countries
During the storage period, growers may encounter such a nuisance as rotting tubers. And often the cause of this disease is not even in storage conditions, but in how dahlias were dug from flower beds and flower beds and how well they were processed before laying for storage.
Dahlias came to our region from warm countries. They are common in Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala. And in our climatic conditions, dahlias cannot hibernate in the ground. The aerial part - a hollow stem with leaves - annually dies off to the level of the root collar. And up to this point, you need to have time to help the plant get rid of unnecessary tops and save the planting material. And for this, cut off the aerial part of the perennial and remove the tubers from the soil.
When to dig up dahlias?
Dahlias are not small flowers. Not only tall, but also medium-sized varieties need a garter. Especially in regions with strong gusty winds. However, some growers practice deep planting of dahlias with earth as the flowers grow. This technique has two advantages:
ā¢ medium-sized flowers do not bend under strong gusts of wind and are able to decorate a flower bed without using little aesthetic pegs;
ā¢ tubers, buds and root collar are not damaged by the first frost, and plants are able to bloom until late autumn.
Therefore, with such a planting, you can not rush to dig up tubers when the air temperature drops and the first frosts.
Dahlia stem pruning
Dahlia lovers know that there are tall varieties with a stem length of about 1.5 m or more. Such flowers cannot do without a garter to the pegs. And before you untie the plant from the support, it is recommended that you first cut off the stem, and only after that remove the support.
Why should you work in this sequence? At the time of pruning, the stem may break arbitrarily, damaging the root collar. And this, as you know, is an extremely vulnerable place in many plants, which serves as an entrance gate for causative agents of various rot and other diseases. In addition, future kidneys may be damaged.
Digging and remembering geometry
Another mistake that can damage the tubers and side roots is the angle at which the shovel is placed when dahlias are dug up. It should be placed perpendicular to the soil level. If you dig at an angle, you can cut the planting material with a sharp point. Instead, use a shovel to trim off all sides of the tuber with an earthen clod. And then carefully pull it out along with the roots and adhering earth.
Preparing tubers for storage
Before sending the tubers for storage, the cuts must be allowed to dry thoroughly. They should wither a little in the fresh air in the open air for several hours.
In addition, the tubers should be cleaned of an earthen coma. For example, rinse under running water. Or let the damp earth dry out and brush it off by hand. This is a necessary measure to check the health of the planting material. It is better to dispose of burned tubers. And scratches need to be given time to tighten, dry. And then transfer the dahlias to a greenhouse or shed so that the slices dry thoroughly.
Dahlia tubers storage
Planting material can be stored both in the basement and indoors:
ā¢ in cool cellars, tubers are lowered in boxes, sprinkled with sand or sawdust, previously treated with a 1% solution of copper sulfate (about 1 liter of solution per sawdust bucket);
ā¢ to store tubers in warm rooms, they should be waxed.
In the basement, keep the planting material at a temperature of + 6 Ā° C ā¦ + 8 Ā° C. It is undesirable to store tubers in bags. In such packaging, they often rot.
