Nowadays, dahlias seem to be the most common flowers. But even some 100 years ago they were a rarity, and 200 years ago - almost a curiosity. In the 19th century, even this name was rarely used. But in Russian classics, you can find another name for a flower - dahlia. Wealthy landowners, noblewomen, ladies asked artists to paint their portraits with a yellow distance on their chest - a symbol of elegance, sophistication and luxury. However, time has done its job. And now it has become available for everyone to purchase planting material and grow magnificent dahlia dahlias in their flower beds. What should you look for when buying? And how to reanimate the corms if you come across a low-quality specimen?

How high-quality planting material should look like

It is best to buy a whole "bunch" of corms for reproduction, on which there is last year's stalk, and a healthy root collar, and dense elastic nodules. Such planting material will germinate with almost one hundred percent guarantee and will present with beautiful flowers.

If you come across an overdried planting material, when it is brittle, has a light weight, then most likely nothing will grow out of it. But if such corms are sold at a good sale, when cheaper - only for nothing, it makes sense to take a good look. Perhaps at least one nodule retained its vitality and adheres well to the root collar. And there is a chance to get a plant out of it.

Sometimes some unscrupulous sellers go for such a trick - they sell tubers separately. And, it would seem, the tuber is good and healthy, but it may not germinate. Because the bud is laid between the tuber and the stem - on the root collar. If you see that there is a piece of the root collar and a characteristic influx near the tuber, then you can take a chance, perhaps it will germinate. It is safer to buy such nodules if the bud is already visible on them. But when there is neither one nor the other on it, most likely, the seller is deliberately cunning and intends to simply sell the broken nodule.

If the dahlias wake up too early

It's too early to plant dahlias in the garden in April. But by this time, the buds may already wake up and even sprout. Therefore, it is worth inspecting the stored or purchased planting material in advance. In order to slow it down in time in case of growth.

What can be done if the kidneys began to wake up ahead of time? First of all, lowering the storage temperature will help. Also, plants may start to germinate due to high humidity. Therefore, dahlias should be moved to a drier and cooler place.

Preparing dahlia tubers for planting

In the process of inspecting the planting material, you can begin to prepare it for future planting. First of all, you need to make sure that the nodules are healthy. You can also trim off those parts that definitely do not form buds. These are broken nodules that dry out from the root collar and those that do not form thickening at the junction.

After that, you need to fold the corms so that the buds are directed upward. If you put the planting material on its side, then the awakened buds and the sprouts that appear will bend. And then there will be problems when planting dahlias in open ground.

Before planting dahlias, it is advisable to germinate. This is done three weeks before planting plants in the garden in open ground. If the tubers dry up during storage, you can try to reanimate them. To do this, before germination, they must be soaked in water or phytosporin solution.

It is very convenient to germinate dahlias in plastic bags - holey bags are perfect for this. Take a bag, pour a suitable soil mixture into it. Then plant a corm in it. And put the bag in the basin. In this form, it is very convenient to germinate dahlias, then to extract them for planting in a flower garden.
