We are already accustomed to the fact that plants from the "Cereals" family are grown by humans not only to feed their bodies, but also for decorative purposes. Sometimes their strict appearance emphasizes the beauty of other flowering plants, but more often, they become an independent decoration of the garden from early spring to late autumn. One of these decorations, which has gained particular popularity among ornamental cereals, is the perennial plant Miscanthus
Plant species
Linear curved long leaves and small inflorescences blooming at the end of summer - brooms paint a portrait of herbaceous cereal perennials. Among the forty plant species, we single out several that have taken root in summer cottages:
•
Sugar-flowered miscanthus (Miscanthus sacchariflorus) is a tall plant with narrow elongated leaves that can reach three meters in height. The leaves outwardly resemble wheat leaves. The central vein on the leaves is light. One of the varieties of sugar-flowered miscanthus surprises with the color of its leaves, which have a white pattern on the surface with a yellow strip. Panicle inflorescences are white or pinkish-silvery. It grows quickly, turning into an aggressor for other plants.
•
Miscanthus giant (Miscanthus Giganteus) - the upright main stem of a giant, up to three meters high, is surrounded by dark green weeping leaves with a white central vein characteristic of Miscanthus. Moreover, it grows rapidly, reaching a height of two meters already in the first year. Its pink inflorescences-panicles, growing up, become silvery, covered with silky hairs.
This giant will decorate any body of water; will become a green screen for nondescript buildings or a compost heap; will become the green background of the mixborder, positioned in its background.
According to some gardeners, Miscanthus gigantic heals the soil, ridding it of herbicides, pesticides and even radioactive contamination.
•
Miscanthus chinese (Miscanthus sinensis) - this type of plant is inferior in height to Miscanthus sugar-flowered, stretching in height by only one and a half to two meters. Moreover, it grows slowly, reaching maximum heights after the moment of planting at the age of a first grader.
The loose bush of Miscanthus chinensis has a short rhizome, rough green-blue linear leaves with a white vein in the center of the leaf. In the Zebrinus variety, the green surface of the leaves is decorated with yellow transverse stripes and spots. And in the very decorative variety "Gracilimus", the leaves are narrow and colored yellow-green.
Panicle spikelets of Miscanthus chinensis are pink, reddish, bronze, brown or silvery with long silky hairs. For example, in the Malepartus variety, the motley beautiful foliage is complemented by bronze ears-panicles.
Chinese miscanthus has successfully adapted to our harsh winters, but it is advisable to cover young shoots with branches of spruce branches before meeting with winter. Miscanthus Chinese is whimsical, loves fertile soil, sunny places, regular watering.
Growing
Miscanthuses are quite unpretentious plants. This does not change their love for sunny territories. They can easily withstand temperature fluctuations, withstand heat and cold.
They are, with rare exceptions, not demanding for soils. The soil must be constantly moist, so in the dry season of summer, the plant needs watering.
In the spring, the plant is cut to the root to ensure better growth and development and is fed with a complex mineral fertilizer.
Miscanthus is propagated by seeds and dividing the bush, immediately replanting the separated parts into peaty soil.
Almost not affected by diseases and pests.
Usage
Miscanthuses, growing as a huge bush with drooping thin leaves, create the effect of a green fountain on the site. Such a bush requires a fairly large piece of land, so such a plant, of course, is not for six acres.
The growth of the plant allows Miscanthus to sit in the background of the mixborder. You just need to remember about the aggressiveness of its individual species, so that one miscanthus does not remain from the whole mixborder.
Miscanthus decorate the shores of reservoirs.
Miscanthus is good as green walls covering outbuildings.
