The wilted saururus came to us from North America. It usually grows in streams and rivers with a slow current, as well as in swampy areas in shaded areas. Most often, this aquatic beauty is used to decorate pools and the shores of decorative ponds. Also, wilted saururus is excellent for growing in aquaterrariums, paludariums and in open aquariums. At the same time, in any conditions, it looks incredibly impressive. And in Dutch aquariums, it is often planted in groups that form picturesque stairs

Getting to know the plant

The drooping saururus is endowed with long, highly branched and creeping rhizomes. The height of a wonderful plant in natural conditions can reach one meter, while in specimens growing in aquariums, it usually does not exceed half a meter. Amusing petiole leaves are alternately located on straight long stems of a drooping saururus. Leaf blades grow up to fifteen centimeters in length and up to eight in width. All of them are egg-shaped, painted in juicy green shades and exude a faint but very pleasant aroma. The bases of the leaves are heart-shaped, and their tops can be either elongated-pointed or sharp. The underwater leaves of the drooping saururus are always naked, and the above-water leaves are pubescent both above and below.

Small flowers of a luxurious aquatic inhabitant are characterized by the absence of corollas and cups and are equipped with a huge number of white stamens forming curved spikelets. By the way, the flower organs of the wilted saururus vaguely resemble similar parts of the plantain. You can admire the bloom of this beautiful aquatic man from July to August.

How to grow

In aquariums, a luxurious aquatic beauty is usually placed on a grotto in pots or in some other place, but so that he is not completely submerged in water. Young specimens are considered the most suitable for cultivation in aquariums. Growing a wilted saururus underwater for a long time is quite problematic, but, nevertheless, it is quite possible.

For the optimal development of a wondrous plant, the best parameters are water hardness from two to ten degrees and acidity in the range from 6, 5 to 7, 5. As for the temperature regime, in the summer it must be maintained in the range from twenty-three to twenty-five degrees. and in the winter - about eighteen.

The soil for growing wilted saururus should be selected nutritious, and the most acceptable substrate for it will be a mixture of peat and clay with sand.

A drooping saururus needs bright lighting, and the best sources of artificial light for it will be fluorescent lamps (varieties of LU with a power of about 0.5 W / l). If the lighting is low enough, then the luxurious aquatic creature will begin to stretch in length. Twelve-hour daylight hours are usually more than enough for this green pet.

The height of the wonderful aquatic beauty should be adjusted from time to time when grown in aquariums. For this, its tops are usually cut off, which it is quite permissible to plant again in the ground. In general, wilted saururus grows extremely slowly, releasing an average of one leaf per month, therefore, in order to admire its dense thickets, you will have to be patient.

Saururus, which has wilted vegetatively, multiplies - for this purpose, pieces of stems with leaves are dipped into water. Some time later, the leaves will fall off, and lateral shoots with roots will begin to form in their sinuses. As soon as three leaves grow on each of the shoots, they are separated by cutting the stems in the center of the internodes. And only after that, new plants are placed in the ground. As for seed reproduction of wilted saururus, it is extremely difficult.
