Lawn wintering - what you need to know about it? Growing a lawn is not an easy task. It requires certain skills and a professional approach. It depends on whether seedlings will appear on the lawn, how quickly they will grow, whether they will be susceptible to diseases and pests. An equally important question arises with the onset of the autumn cold: how to ensure the wintering of the lawn so that next spring it will again please with its delicate greenery? To help the lawn cope with unfavorable winter conditions, a number of necessary preparatory procedures should be performed: mowing, feeding, watering, aerating the soil
Features of an autumn haircut
It is imperative to mow the lawn, because thanks to this, a dense grass carpet is formed from it. Also, a competent haircut helps to get rid of weeds for a long time. In the summer, this procedure is performed quite often - almost every week. With the onset of autumn cold weather, the growth of the grass slows down significantly, so the haircut is performed less and less. However, you should be aware that if it is completely stopped, then the wilted grass in the spring can become an obstacle to the growth of young shoots. That is why the lawn should be covered with snow when mown.
Experts advise to perform the last mowing of the lawn about a week before the onset of frost. Since it is impossible to predict the weather with high accuracy, it is advisable to cut the grass as it grows. Moreover, its height should be at least 5 centimeters so that the plants do not waste the necessary nutrients before wintering.
Necessary feeding and watering
An important stage in preparing a green lawn for wintering is feeding it. It is carried out with various potassium-phosphorus mineral fertilizers. The action of potassium is similar to antifreeze - it prevents the plant from freezing in winter. An equally important mineral is phosphorus, which ensures normal growth and development of plants.
Autumn top dressing of the lawn is carried out in October. When choosing a fertilizer, you need to pay attention to the nitrogen content in it. The fact is that the introduction of nitrogen before wintering for the lawn is not permissible. It causes rapid cell division, and as a result, accelerated plant growth. Such a lawn in winter can even die.
Watering the lawn in the fall can be done every five days. If the weather is rainy, then it may be quite enough, and you do not need to water the lawn additionally. In October, experts recommend stopping watering the lawn grass in order to prevent excessive waterlogging of the soil.
Soil aeration
To improve the quality of the soil and allow rainwater to freely penetrate into its thickness, the soil is aerated. This can be done both with the help of ordinary garden forks, piercing the sod with them, and using a walk-behind tractor or aerator. Thanks to this procedure, the drainage of the soil is improved, and the root system of the plants is supplied with air. Aeration is required mainly for clay and loamy soils.
So, all the necessary stages of care have been met. What should be done in the end? In autumn, you can smooth out all the lawn pits and irregularities with sand, and cover its entire area with a mixture of peat and compost to increase soil fertility.
In addition, for a favorable wintering of the lawn, several rules should be observed:
- in winter, the lawn should not be exposed to heavy loads. Therefore, it is advisable not to walk on it during this period. This rule must be observed in rainy weather, since at this time the plants are the weakest and most vulnerable;
- the ice crust appearing on the surface of the lawn should be removed to provide air access to the plants;
- a large accumulation of snow should not be allowed on the lawn, which can lead to a deterioration in its appearance in spring.
With these maintenance rules in mind, you will help your lawn cope with the winter frost. And then in the spring it will again delight you with its bright, delicate greenery.
