It is noteworthy that the stems of the wintering horsetail always hibernate in green, and their ribs are always equipped with two rows of bizarre silica tubercles. As for the leaf teeth tightly pressed to the stems, they fall off quite early and almost entirely.
Each plant has one oval apical spikelet. These spore-bearing spikelets are slightly pointed and reach a length of 10 - 15 mm. The wintering horsetail blooms in June-August. There is also a particularly decorative form of this plant with short lateral branches.
The use of wintering horsetail
This plant, although poisonous, is nevertheless medicinal. For medicinal purposes, wintering horsetail herb is mainly used - it contains various tannins and sugar, as well as nicotine alkaloid, resins, mucus, equisetinic acid, dimethylsulfone and silicic acid. By the way, there are so few alkaloids in this green medicine that a number of researchers have not been able to find them at all.
In empirical medicine of the peoples of America, Siberia and Europe, along with Chinese medicine, a healing decoction of wintering horsetail herb is widely used. It perfectly helps with various renal diseases and chronic urethritis, urinary incontinence and hematuria, as well as with diseases of the bladder. And the hemostatic and excellent astringent effect of this medicinal herb makes it possible to use it for inflammation of ulcerated eyes, gonorrhea, leucorrhoea, hemorrhoids and with rather heavy menstruation. It is often recommended as a diaphoretic, as well as for rheumatic joint lesions as a pain reliever.
Due to the presence of wintering silica in the walls of horsetail, it can be used for cleaning dishes, as well as for grinding metal products.
How to grow
For the favorable development of the wintering horsetail, fertile soils will be required. Damp shores are ideal for this. It is better to choose clay, sandy or stony soil. And the wintering horsetail can grow in partial shade and in the sun. It is permissible to plant it both directly into the ground and into special containers.
The wintering horsetail reproduces by dividing the bushes. In principle, it can also propagate by seeds, however, in this case, the spores should be sown immediately after they ripen, since their germination capacity lasts only a few days. And the vegetative propagation of this green pet is carried out by dividing the rhizomes or segments of the stems.
Wintering horsetail is a very cold-hardy and winter-hardy plant. However, for the winter, it is recommended to either slightly submerge it in the water, or drop it in the garden in small containers.
The wintering horsetail does not require special care, however, it is systematically necessary to limit the distribution of this beautiful plant. True, of all the varieties of horsetails, it is the least aggressive. You should also cut off its old stems, as they lose their decorative effect.
