African exotic beauty only at first glance seems whimsical. She will become a delightful participant in the mixborder, decorating it with her graceful bright leaves. And during the flowering period, when its spike-shaped multicolor inflorescences bloom, it will simply be impossible to pass by the flower garden indifferently
The genus of Knifofius
Perennial herbaceous rhizome plants of the genus Kniphofia unite more than 70 species in their ranks. They stand out for their spike-shaped lush inflorescences, located at the ends of erect leafless peduncles. The drooping tubular flowers bloom from June to October, striking the imagination with the variety and brightness of the color.
The shape and size of the leaves differ from species to species. More often the leaves are narrow, like in cereal ornamental plants, but they can also be wide.
Plant species
•
Berry knifofia (Kniphofia uvaria) - has lanceolate, very long, with parallel venation, leaves inclining to the ground. Orange-red tubular small flowers are collected in long cylindrical inflorescences, located at the apex of erect rigid leafless peduncles ranging in height from 45 centimeters to two meters.
Breeders have bred many varieties and garden forms from berry knifofia, the inflorescences of which are much larger than the maternal ones. Various hybrids have also been bred. Among them are the following: "Royal Standard", blooming in June-July with scarlet-red and yellow flowers; "The Maid of Orleans", which blooms throughout the summer with white and creamy yellow flowers; "Golden scallop" and "Cobra" with late flowering period; "John Benary", which flowers are orange, blooming in August-September.
•
Stem knifofia (Kniphofia caulescens) - bluish-green narrow saber-shaped leaves grow from the base of the peduncle, and the inflorescences bloom at the end of summer. They are oval or cylindrical in shape, and the tubular flowers on them are first pink, then yellow.
•
Modest Knifofia (Kniphofia modesta) - blooms early (June-July) with creamy white inflorescences with pink tops.
•
Knifofia Thunberg (Kniphofia tunbergii) - blooms in July-September with ears of yellow flowers.
•
Knifofia Galpini (Kniphofia galpinii) - late blooming with orange-yellow flowers in August-September.
•
Garden forms and hybrid varieties by flowering time are divided into groups:
**
Early flowering - "Alcazar" with orange flowers; "Bee sunset" with bright orange flowers, collected in spike-shaped inflorescences; "Other golden" with light yellow flowers; "Springtime" with red and creamy yellow flowers.
**
Medium early flowering - "Bee lemon" with yellow flowers; "Samuel's Sensation" with bright red inflorescences-ears.
**
Late flowering - Kniphofia nelsonii major with bright red flowers.
Growing
Like many plants, Knifofia prefers fertile light soils, moderately moist, drained. The places are very sunny.
In areas with a cold climate, it is planted in the ground in the fall, with a warm one - in the fall or spring. To make the branched lush roots comfortable, the planting holes are made deep by adding organic fertilizers to them.
In the northern regions, the rhizome, sensitive to cold, is dug up for the winter and harvested until spring in a cool room. In the middle lane, they are left in the soil, well covered with foliage or straw. In the southern regions, Knifofia winters calmly in the open field.
Propagated less often by seeds, more often by dividing the bush in April.
Usage
Knifofia is good on a green lawn both in a single planting and sitting on it as a delightful group.
Depending on the height of the variety, it will decorate any mixborder plan, keeping company with other ornamental plants.
It is stored for a long time in the cut.
