A relative of Buckwheat, whose groats are very popular in Russian food, are more familiar to people as a medicinal plant. But certain types of Highlander are very decorative and can become an adornment of different types of summer cottages
Clan Highlander
More than two hundred plant species are united by the Highlander genus from the Buckwheat family. The botanical name of the genus, Polygonum (Polygonum), is based on two Greek words, the meaning of which in Russian can be expressed by the word "polygon". Probably, this name was given to the Highlander for his triangular-shaped nut-seeds.
Plants can be herbaceous or subshrub, annual or perennial, erect or curly. Among the many members of the genus, there are frost-resistant species that can be grown in our harsh climate. The decorativeness of certain types of Highlander, with the simplicity of their cultivation, makes them attractive for decorating summer cottages.
Varieties
* Highlander serpentine (Polygonum bistorta) - herbaceous medicinal plant, annual. As an ornamental plant, one variety is used with pink spikes-inflorescences and ovoid leaves. The name of the variety is "Magnificent".
* Highlander kindred (Polygonum affine) is a ground cover perennial that feels comfortable in rock gardens. The spike inflorescences are collected from pink flowers. If you choose a sunny place for it, you will get a solid dense pink-green carpet.
* Highlander bell-shaped (Polygonum campanulatum) is a tall perennial that grows up to 1 meter in height, with oval leaves and clusters of pink fragrant flowers.
* Highlander stalk embracing (Polygonum amplexicaule) - botanical species grows up to 1 meter in height and has heart-shaped leaves and red or white cluster inflorescences. In culture, as a rule, lower varieties are grown. Blooms throughout the summer.
* Highlander Aubert (Polygonum aubertii) is a climbing perennial with oblong-ovoid leaves and white or pink flowers on a long stem (up to 9 meters long).
* Highlander multiflorous (Polygonum multiflorum) is a climbing plant used for wall decoration. It grows up to 4 meters high. Panicle inflorescences of pink or white flowers bloom in summer. Requires shelter for the winter.
* Baljuan Highlander (Polygonum baldschuanicum) is a climbing plant that grows up to 6 meters, with large, spreading cluster inflorescences of light pink or white flowers. Requires shelter for the winter.
Growing
Knotweed loves to grow in the shade, other species prefer sunny or partial shade. Most species are frost resistant.
Highlander needs fertile soil, rich in humus, loose and slightly moist. The varieties used to decorate rock gardens are unpretentious to soils. The most capricious and whimsical is the climbing Highlander multi-flowered, for which the soil requires fertile, with an admixture of peat. If the soil is poor, it should be fed with well-rotted manure in the fall.
In the spring, the curly species of the Highlander are pinched. In ordinary species, the aerial part of the plant is cut off in the fall.
Watering is moderate, regular, more abundant in dry summer months.
Reproduction
Like all rhizomes, Highlander can be easily propagated by dividing the bushes, or by parts of the rhizome, immediately planting the separated parts in open ground to a permanent place.
Climbing species propagate using cuttings, which can be semi-lignified or completely lignified. The further reproduction procedure depends on the type of cutting. Lignified cuttings are planted in the ground immediately after harvesting. Semi-lignified cuttings are planted in a mixture of peat and sand so that they take root, and only in the spring, rooted cuttings are planted in a permanent place.
Enemies
The enemies are the larvae of insect pests that love to feast on all parts of the plant.
