Pomegranates are a real storehouse of vitamins and all kinds of useful substances. These unique bright fruits can even reduce the effect of radiation on the human body! The excellent pomegranate juice is especially famous for its healing properties. In order to pamper yourself with delicious pomegranates for as long as possible, it is important to learn how to choose and store them correctly. In principle, there is nothing difficult in this - if you follow the basic storage rules, pomegranates can be stored for more than six months

How to choose?

Quality pomegranates must be dry on the outside and juicy on the inside. The crusts (pericarp) of ripe fruits are usually thin, leathery, rather hard, slightly dried out and, as it were, tight-fitting grains. If the crusts of the pomegranate are moist and elastic, then, most likely, the fruits were harvested prematurely.

In addition, pomegranate crusts should be uniform in color (brownish, red, light yellow or light green) and have a slight glossy sheen. If brownish or brownish spots with black cores appear on the fruits, this indicates that the fruits are affected by black rot.

It is best to purchase the heaviest fruits - as a rule, they are generously filled with juice, and there are practically no extremely unwanted voids in them. The best varieties usually weigh up to 700 g. Another way to test the quality of pomegranates is to lightly press on them. If you feel the crunch of ripe seeds, you can safely take the fruits.

The next sign of the maturity of pomegranates is the presence of the so-called "crown" on the very top of the head. This "crown" is nothing more than the flower cup remaining with the fruit. These cups are characterized by a leathery surface and triangular sepals-lobes. In high-quality fruits, the calyces are always open, colored and dryish. And the tails of ripe fruits are never green.

Ripe pomegranates are harvested approximately in October-November. All damaged and rotten fruits must be discarded immediately. And their softness can be both a sign of freezing, and a sign of improper storage or shock during transportation.

How to store?

For subsequent storage, only healthy fruits should be selected that have absolutely no flaws.

In general, grenades perfectly tolerate even the most difficult transportation and are distinguished by excellent keeping quality. However, they are able to quickly lose moisture, along with which the valuable juiciness of these beautiful fruits is lost. Accordingly, stored grenades should never be allowed to dry out.

Ideally, pomegranates are stored wrapped in paper in rooms with high air humidity. And in order to prevent their premature drying, it is recommended to fill the pomegranate "crowns" with an earthen solution (to obtain it, the clay must be diluted to the consistency of sour cream with water). When the solution dries, you can immediately send the pomegranates for storage.

It is also important to know that during the storage period, the pomegranate peel gradually dries up, but the grains, in any case, retain their juiciness and wonderful aroma. And the stored fruits that did not have time to ripen almost always ripen on the spot.

Store pomegranates at low temperatures. In this case, the most optimal temperature is considered to be about one degree. Depending on the variety, pomegranates can be stored in such conditions for up to nine months. At the same time, sour varieties are stored much better than sweetish ones - the latter most often can be preserved only up to five months.

If the temperature exceeds one degree, but does not rise above ten degrees, ripe pomegranates will be stored for about two months. In cellars, on loggias or in storerooms, it is recommended to store pomegranates in boxes covered with cardboard or paper. However, instead of cardboard or paper, it is quite acceptable to use some other soft moisture-absorbing material. If there is a separate paper bag for each fruit, the pomegranates will last even better!

And to preserve the juicy pomegranate seeds, they are put in plastic bags and frozen.
