Sowing chrysanthemum (lat. Chrysanthemum segetum) - an annual plant that is a representative of the genus Chrysanthemum of the Asteraceae family. In nature, the species is common in European countries and in Russia, as a rule, it is found in fields and fallow lands. Today, chrysanthemum sowing is actively cultivated in many countries for the purpose of decorating garden plots. The culture has won special love among Dutch gardeners and florists, because it has high cold-resistant properties.

Characteristics of culture

Sowing chrysanthemum is represented by annual plants up to 60 cm high, characterized by rapid growth and abundant flowering. The stems of the species under consideration are erect, moderately branched or simple. They, in turn, have sessile, elongated, whole foliage of green or bluish-green color. Some cultivars are characterized by foliage that is pinnately lobed or serrated along the edge.

Chrysanthemum inflorescences can be yellow, golden or white in color. The diameter of the baskets does not exceed 7-8 cm. The flowering of the culture is observed in early summer and continues until the onset of frost. Fruits are represented by narrow wedge-shaped achenes equipped with four edges. Seeds are light, yellow, medium-sized, viable for up to three years.

The species in question, like most representatives of the Asteraceae family, belongs to the category of light-loving and drought-resistant crops. They easily tolerate a short-term drought, can grow freely on poor and calcareous soils, however, under such conditions, they will not please with abundant flowering. The sun is the best ally of the seed chrysanthemum, therefore, the culture should be allocated open sunny areas, preferably with diffused light.

It is recommended to choose light soils, moderately moist, nutritious. Plants do not accept heavy clay, waterlogged, saline and waterlogged soils. On heavy cultivation is possible only if there is high-quality drainage. Sowing chrysanthemum is unpretentious in care, it is enough to regularly perform standard procedures - watering, feeding, removing weeds. Pest and disease prevention is also encouraged, especially in unfavorable years.

Usage

Sowing chrysanthemum is most often used to decorate flower beds, ridges, mixborders. You can also use it as a pot culture. The flowers of the culture in question have long been considered medicinal raw materials. They are harvested during the period of mass flowering. The infusion of chrysanthemum flowers is recommended as an analgesic, soothing and anti-inflammatory agent. It is also suitable for accelerating the healing of open and purulent wounds. Also, the infusion is advised to be taken in case of headaches.

Varieties

Sowing chrysanthemum is rarely involved in breeding work. However, breeders managed to get some amazing varieties. For example, the Eldorado variety conquered gardeners with baskets, the reed flowers of which have a rich lemon shade, and the tubular flowers are dark in color. No less attractive is the variety referred to as "Gloria". It is characterized by baskets, the central part of which is copper, and the reed flowers are yellow.
