Chrysanthemum keeled (lat. Chrysanthemum carinatum) - an annual herb belonging to the genus Chrysanthemum of the numerous Asteraceae family, or Asteraceae. This species is often called tricolor chrysanthemum. This aspect is associated with an unusual tricolor color, for which the culture has become widespread among gardeners and florists. The homeland of the plant is considered to be the northern and western regions of Africa. In the same place, the species grows in natural conditions.
Characteristics of culture
Chrysanthemum keeled is represented by annual herbaceous plants up to 70 cm in height, forming a fleshy and very branched stem in the process of growth, topped with juicy, double pinnately separate green leaves.
Inflorescences, like all representatives of the Asteraceae family, are baskets. They (depending on the variety) are simple, semi-double or double, do not exceed 7 cm in diameter. The marginal flowers of the culture under consideration bear three colors, the tubular ones are always dark red.
It should be noted that keeled chrysanthemum inflorescences emit a pleasant and rich aroma, which is carried by the wind over long distances. Abundant flowering, annual, lasts from early summer to mid-autumn, which largely depends on climatic conditions and quality of care.
Fruits are represented by triangular achenes with wing-like outgrowths. Seeds, in turn, are numerous, light, retain their germination capacity for up to three years. When sowing, the seeds sprout amicably, and you can sow both on seedlings and immediately into the openings of the soil.
Growing features
Chrysanthemum keeled cannot be attributed to whimsical plants. Its cultivation is subject even to a novice gardener and florist. The only point: for active tillering and, accordingly, the formation of a large number of inflorescences, it is important to pinch the tops of the plants (when they reach a height of 15-20 cm).
It should also be noted that the culture is cold-resistant, but it will not stand strong frosts. Therefore, it is preferable to plant seedlings at the end of May, although the seeds can be sown before winter, but in early spring, carefully monitor the weather, and in case of night frosts, cover the sprouted crops.
When planting seedlings, it is necessary to maintain a distance between plants equal to 25-30 cm. If you go against the rules, the plants will not be able to develop normally, because one bush forms a very lush mass during the growth process.
Care consists in simple procedures - weeding and watering. The culture tolerates drought calmly, but it is better not to allow the soil to dry out for a long time. The first feeding should be carried out at the beginning of summer with nitrogen fertilizers, the second - in the second half of the summer with complex mineral fertilizers.
As the inflorescences wither, they should be removed, otherwise the culture will direct all its forces to the formation of seeds. If this procedure is carried out on time, the plants will delight with long and abundant flowering.
Varieties
There are quite a few varieties of chrysanthemum killetaty, and each is worthy of being listed on garden beds. For example, grade "Nordstern" boasts baskets, the ligulate flowers of which are white, turning to the base in a yellow tint. No less attractive
grade "Flammenspiel", it has baskets bearing brownish-red ligulate flowers, equipped at the base with a yellow ringlet.
Also gained popularity among gardeners and florists
variety "Cockarde" … It is famous for its baskets, the reed flowers of which are white in color, smoothly turning into a carmine base. Among the varieties that form multi-colored baskets in the process of growth, one can note the variety
