In the fall, they plant not only bulbous and corm flowers, but also other perennials. In particular, this is the right time to decorate your site with chrysanthemums. Let's talk about which chrysanthemums give flower growers less trouble and how to "settle" them in their flower beds
Small but remote
If you want your chrysanthemum to receive a permanent "residence permit" on your site, then it is better to choose a small-flowered Korean one. This variety adapts better to the cold season than its large-flowered relatives and does not require annual digging and storage in a cellar.
Large-flowered chrysanthemums can winter in the ground, but only under two conditions:
• in regions with moderate winter cold;
• require shelter during the cold season.
But small-flowered ones are not so whimsical, and are able to winter in the ground even without shelter. Just choose early flowering varieties. Since chrysanthemum is a flower that pleases with its flowering with the arrival of autumn, for late-flowering varieties there may not be enough warm period to form and open the buds.
By the way, so that the flower bed is not empty during the summer, chrysanthemums can be placed together with perennials that bloom earlier. For example, they coexist well next to daffodils or roses.
Chrysanthemum preparation for planting
Chrysanthemum is such an amazing flower that can be sold for propagation right with the flowers. It is a great temptation to plant such a bush on your site and immediately admire its beautiful view in the first autumn. However, this should not be done.
Now our task is to create such conditions so that the roots take root as best as possible and as soon as possible. And when the plant blooms, it gives all its strength to the flower. Therefore, before planting, it is necessary to "cheat" and cut off all the flowers so that the perennial in a new place first of all develops flowers and future buds.
Also, do not spare and cut off the branches with leaves. The leaves will evaporate moisture, and for us this is also extra ballast on the path of rooting. Leave only cuttings about 10-15 cm long. And flowers on high stems are better placed in a vase - let them decorate the room.
Pillow and feather bed for chrysanthemum
The rhizome of the chrysanthemum is small. However, if your site has heavy clay or poor sandy soil, you need to dig a hole deeper and wider. This is required in order to create a so-called "root cushion" for the shrub, namely, to fill this place with a loose and fertile soil mixture.
How to "stuff a pillow" for a chrysanthemum? For these purposes, a composition such as leaf humus with peat is perfect.
What else chrysanthemum does not like is soil acidification and stagnant water. Therefore, it would be reasonable to arrange a pillow for the chrysanthemum on a kind of "feather bed", that is, on a hill. Especially if the site is located in the lowlands.
So that the chrysanthemum does not freeze
The peculiarity of the structure of the mother liquor of the chrysanthemum is that new buds are laid above the root collar and young shoots rise above the old ones. Every year they are located closer to the surface of the earth. And this must be taken into account when determining the depth of planting a perennial in a new place. Because if you place the rhizome too shallow, new shoots in winter may appear on the surface. And then they will be damaged by frost. That is why, over time, even a winter-hardy bush will need to be mulched, and after a few years it is necessary to dig, divide and transplant. Well, at the first planting, it is necessary to plant the mother plant so that the buds are covered with earth, that is, to slightly deepen the root collar.
And for greater confidence that the new flower will not freeze, it can be covered with twigs, making a kind of hut. Or put arcs and cover with lutrasil. This will protect you from high humidity and frost.
