Rudbeckia triloba (lat. Rudbeckia triloba) - a flowering annual plant from the Asteraceae family that entered culture in 1699.
Description
Rudbeckia triloba is a spectacular herbaceous annual, whose height ranges from sixty centimeters to one and a half meters. A huge number of its hairy and incredibly strong stems branches quite strongly near the bases, and bright green leaves reaching twelve centimeters in length can have both ovoid and oblong shapes. In addition, they can be either nude or slightly pubescent. And close to the bases, they gradually taper into winged petioles.
On this plant, quite a lot of fancy baskets are formed, the diameter of which can vary from three to four centimeters. The tubular flowers of the rudbeckia trilob boast a black and scarlet color, and the reed flowers reaching two centimeters in length are always shiny and colored orange or yellow.
Rudbeckia triloba is characterized by a rather late flowering - from August to October.
Growing and caring
Rudbeckia triloba boasts impressive frost resistance - it can withstand temperatures down to minus twenty-nine degrees! As a rule, its cultivation does not require colossal financial costs or serious hassle.
Most often, rudbeckia triloba is grown from seeds (however, everyone can easily propagate it by dividing the bushes), which can be germinated not only in flower beds, but also by seedlings in greenhouses or at home. At the same time, it does not hurt to know that flowering from rudbeckia in the first year, if planted with seeds, should not be expected - beautiful flowers will bloom only next summer.
Rudbeckia seeds can be planted in the soil even in March, when the soil is ripe for appropriate mechanical treatment. It is quite possible to sow them before winter - the seeds of beautiful flowers are also not afraid of frost at all. True, in the latter case, one should be puzzled by sowing seeds only with the onset of stable cold weather, when the plants can no longer sprout and subsequently die from frost. As a rule, the end of October or the beginning of November is suitable for this.
The soil for planting rudbeckia triloba should be fertile, ideally slightly acidic. Various fertilizers are necessarily applied to them: both organic and mineral, and mulch will certainly come in handy to ensure proper aeration. If the soil on the site is clayey, then it will not hurt to dilute it with compost and sandstone - this will guarantee the soil good air permeability and save the roots from possible rotting.
You should not plant the seeds too deep - it is quite enough to place them at a depth of one or two centimeters. To do this, first, with the help of a small hoe or a flat cutter, shallow grooves are prepared, after which the seeds are placed in them at a fairly solid distance from each other and these grooves are closed with the back of the rake. As for the distance between the rows, it should be within twenty five to thirty centimeters.
Rudbeckia trilob should be watered sparingly, so as not to get a huge puddle, after which a dense crust with cracks will form on the soil. It is better to water the plant more often and less than occasionally and in large quantities.
And as soon as the first shoots appear, do not forget about weeding - in this case, not only weeds should be removed, but also noticeably weakened or excessive shoots of the rudbeckia itself. Excessive thickening of plantings also does not carry anything good in itself, since it often leads to fragility and stretching of plants.
