Rudbeckia glossy (lat. Rudbeckia nitida) - flowering culture; a representative of the genus Rudbeckia of the Asteraceae family. Homeland - North America. Typical natural places are shady areas with damp soils. Unpretentious view. It is actively used by gardeners and flower growers for landscaping backyard and summer cottages.
Characteristics of culture
Glossy rudbeckia is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 1, 8-2 m high with strong erect stems bearing shiny, green, lanceolate fruit-shaped leaves. Inflorescences-baskets with a diameter of no more than 10-12 cm, consist of green tubular flowers, yellow ovarian flowers. Glossy rudbeckia blooms in early to mid-July, flowering lasts until frost.
This species is distinguished by high winter-hardy properties, suitable for cultivation in central Russia. It grows rather quickly, already in the first year forms large inflorescences-baskets with thin and delicate ligulate flowers of a pure bright yellow color. When blooming, the ligulate flowers are directed upwards, after a while they lie horizontally, and after full blooming they go down, as a result, the flower takes the form of a hat or a half-open umbrella.
By the age of 2-3 years, a powerful root system is formed in rudbeckia, most of the roots of which go to a depth of 25-35 cm. Thanks to this feature, this species easily tolerates both excess moisture and excessive drought. Therefore, it is undemanding to soil conditions, although it does not accept heavy clay soils and saline soils. It is also not sensitive to its location; it can grow in both sunny and shady areas.
Popular varieties
There are few varieties of glossy rudbeckia, of which the most common are:
* Herbstonne (Herbston) - the variety is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 200 cm in height with large inflorescences-baskets, distinguished by strongly bent reed flowers. Suitable for decorating mixborders, as well as decorating fences and outbuildings of an unsightly look.
* Goldschirm (Goldshirm) - the variety is represented by perennial herbaceous plants over 230-240 cm in height with a strongly branched stem bearing light green lanceolate foliage. Inflorescences-baskets with a diameter of 10-12 cm, consist of green tubular flowers and rich yellow reed flowers. The variety boasts a long flowering period of up to 60 days.
* Juligold (Dzhuligold) - the variety is represented by perennial herbaceous plants with strong strongly branched stems 180-200 cm high, crowned with large inflorescences-baskets with bright yellow reed flowers. Flowering begins in early to mid July, ends in late September and early October. A highly decorative variety, difficult to distinguish from the previous two.
Growing features
Unlike dissected rudbeckia, the species in question cannot be called aggressive, of course, it can boast of rapid growth (it gives up to three shoots a year), but with timely care it does not fill impressive territories. Rudbeckia is propagated by glossy seeds and dividing the bush. The second method is more common among gardeners and florists. The division procedure is carried out in early spring or in mid - late September.
Usage
It should be noted that glossy rudbeckia has a rather expressive bush shape, combining several copies at once, you can create an incredibly beautiful and lush composition that will decorate any (even inconspicuous) corner of the garden. Also, the species under consideration is suitable for single plantings and flower beds with tall crops, including cereals. It is not forbidden to use glossy rudbeckia as a background for undersized and medium-sized perennials. They will also transform the area with ornamental trees and shrubs.
