Rudbeckia hybrid (lat. Rudbeckia x hybrida) - flowering culture; a representative of the genus Rudbeckia of the Asteraceae family. It is a hybrid, includes groups of varieties obtained by crossing hairy rudbeckia (lat. Rudbeckia hirta), dissected rudbeckia (lat. Rudbeckia laciniata) and glossy rudbeckia (lat. Rudbeckia nitida).
Characteristics of culture
Hybrid rudbeckia is represented by plants reaching a height of 1, 2 m, with dense, strong, highly branched, densely leafy stems, pubescent with coarse short hairs over the entire surface. The leaves are ovoid or oval, like the stems, pubescent, the lower ones are on long petioles, the upper ones are sessile. Inflorescences in the form of baskets, no more than 20-25 cm in diameter, consist of yellowish-brownish or golden reed flowers, and purple-brownish or blackish-brown tubular small flowers. Fruits in the form of shiny achenes, up to 30 mm in length. In the process of growth, hybrid rudbeckia forms powerful herbaceous bushes, almost covered with large baskets.
Popular varieties
All varieties of hybrid rudbeckia are quite attractive, but they are especially popular among gardeners:
* Amber - the variety is represented by perennials, reaching a height of 60-70 cm with densely pubescent stems and medium baskets, flaunting on elongated peduncles. The inflorescences consist of brown or purple tubular and bright yellow marginal flowers. The receptacle is hemispherical. The variety is drought-resistant and frost-resistant. Bloom in the third decade of June - the first decade of July. Long bloom, up to 55-65 days. Suitable for creating group plantings and compositions on the lawn.
* Bright autumn - the variety is represented by perennials over 1 m in height with straight rough stems and large baskets, which reach 7-15 cm in diameter. The inflorescences consist of reed purple-pinkish flowers, pointed at the tips, and reddish-brown or yellow with a green tint tubular flowers. The variety is actively used to decorate various flower beds. It goes well with perennial and annual asters, phlox and monarda.
* Gloriosa Desy (Gloriosa Desi) - the variety is characterized by perennials up to 1.2 m high with large baskets reaching a diameter of 7-16 cm. The inflorescences consist of brownish tubular and brownish-yellow or rich brown or dark brown marginal flowers in several rows (from 1 to 3). Flowering begins in the second decade of June, lasts about 2-2.5 months.
* Duble Desy (Double Desi) - the variety is characterized by perennials up to 1, 2 m high with rough strongly branched stems covered with whole pubescent oval or ovoid leaves. Inflorescences-baskets reach 15-18 cm in diameter, terry. Consist of brown tubular and variegated ligulate flowers. Flowering occurs in the second or third decade of June.
* Golden storm - the variety is characterized by perennials reaching a height of 0.6 m with baskets not exceeding 12 cm in diameter. The inflorescences consist of golden-yellow hanging marginal flowers, often with a dark center, and brownish tubular flowers. Outwardly, the basket resembles a straw hat (due to the convex dark middle and hanging edge flowers). A versatile variety. Ideal for decorating mixborders, flower beds, creating groups on the lawn. Suitable for cutting. Combines well with other flower crops such as phlox, asters, delphiniums and cereals.
Care and growing conditions
Hybrid rudbeckia prefers areas open to the sun with moist, rich, loose soils. The culture is undemanding in care, it needs watering during a drought, fertilizing twice a season and an annual addition of fresh fertile soil to the root system. Tall varieties must be tied up, otherwise the stems will disintegrate in different directions under their own weight. To ensure decorativeness, faded inflorescences should be removed. With the onset of autumn, the plants are cut off, leaving stumps no more than 10 cm in height. Shelter for the winter is necessary only in regions with cold winters.
