Rough catula (lat. Cotula squalida) - a representative of the genus Kotula of the Asteraceae family, or Astrovye. New Zealand is considered to be the birthplace of the plant. It also grows in natural conditions. Most often found in swamps and bogs. The view is undersized, it is used to form alpine slides and decorate the spaces between the steps.
Characteristics of culture
The rough catula is represented by perennial herbaceous plants no more than 5-7 cm in height. It is characterized by thick dark green foliage, often shimmering with a cold snap into a brownish or even reddish-brown hue. The inflorescences-baskets are inconspicuous, small, up to 0.5-0.7 cm in diameter, green or yellowish-green, have no decorative value.
The main role is played by the foliage and the "pillows" that form in the process of growth, which cover the unsightly space between the steps. Moreover, they are not afraid of the human leg, they are not trampled, they continue to actively grow and develop. It is not afraid of a rough cauldron and light frosts. But stagnant spring precipitation does not accept.
Growing features
Rough cat is not a whimsical plant. She accepts both sunny and semi-shaded areas. Soils are desirable drained, sandy, rich in humus, moderately moist, well-permeable. Heavy clayey, saline and waterlogged soils are the enemies of kotula. It is undesirable to plant on sites with such soils.
Rough cootula is propagated by vegetative and seed methods. Sowing, in turn, is carried out in the third decade of February - the first decade of March in seedling boxes filled with soil made up of garden soil, compost and coarse river sand. Seeds are evenly scattered over the soil surface, sprinkled with soil, watered with a spray bottle, covered with foil and placed on a sunny windowsill.
Seedlings always appear amicably, usually after 2-3 weeks. The seedlings are planted in a permanent place in the third decade of May - the first decade of June at a distance of 25 cm. Before the seedlings are hardened. Plants grow quickly and form lush, attractive cushions. True, in order for the plants to develop actively, it is necessary to provide them with regular and abundant watering, of course, without waterlogging.
The vegetative method involves cuttings. Cuttings are cut in September, each cutting should have a kidney. The cuttings are immediately planted in a permanent place, they quickly take root and the next spring they actively grow. If the cold came too early, then it is advisable to cover the cuttings with a layer of fallen leaves to prevent freezing.
