Viburnum folded (lat. Viburnum plicatum) - a species of the genus Kalina of the Axod family. The birthplace of culture is China and Japan. In Russia, the species under consideration is not widespread, and practically does not occur in nurseries, although it can boast of frost-resistant properties (it can withstand frosts down to -25C). It has several decorative forms and varieties used in landscape design.
Characteristics of culture
Folded viburnum is a spreading shrub up to 3 m high with beautiful green foliage of a wide oval shape. The leaf blade differs from other representatives of the genus, its surface is finely folded with frequent parallel veins that extend from the central vein. Outwardly, the leaves look velvety, with short-pointed tips.
The flowers are small, creamy white, collected in corymbose inflorescences, which are formed from two opposite buds. Fruits when ripe are blue-black, unripe - red, poisonous, not edible. Flowering in May-June, fruits ripen in October.
Forms and varieties
* Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum (tall form) - represented by shrubs with strongly wrinkled leaves up to 10 cm long, outwardly similar to the foliage of the forked viburnum. The flowers are white, collected in flat inflorescences, The species is relatively frost-resistant, withstands frosts down to -25C.
* Viburnum plicatum var. plicatum (long-flowering form) - represented by shrubs with long flowering. This species is grown mainly in China and Japan. The flowers are large, numerous, collected in spherical inflorescences, reaching a diameter of 10 cm.
The second form has several varieties:
* Mariesi is a frost-resistant, long-flowering variety with flat inflorescences up to 20 cm in diameter;
* Pink Beauty - long-flowering variety with white, and later - pale pink flowers;
* Watanabe - the variety is represented by shrubs up to 1 m high, blooming until late autumn;
* Lanarth - shrubs up to 1.5 m high, characterized by a lush crown.
The subtleties of growing
Viburnum folded - an adherent of the sun and heat, it develops well in open areas without shading. Soils are preferable humus, light, loose, moist, permeable, slightly acidic, neutral or slightly alkaline. The close occurrence of groundwater is not encouraged. Folded viburnum needs regular and moderate watering. Watering is especially important in dry and hot weather.
For the normal development of the crop, weeding, preventive treatment against pests and sanitary pruning, which consists in removing damaged shoots, are also required. Mulching the soil under the bush is desirable, but not necessary. Mulch will allow you to retain moisture received from the outside for a longer period. In the immediate vicinity of shrubs, it is not forbidden to plant flower crops and grasses that do not require deep loosening.
With improper care or unfavorable growing conditions, the leaves of plants are often covered with brown spots, this disease is called mottling. The fight against this disease cannot be postponed; if found, it is necessary to remove the damaged leaves and spray the bushes with fungicides. For preventive treatments, it is recommended to use an infusion of garlic or tobacco.
Purchase of seedlings and planting
When buying seedlings in a nursery, you should pay special attention to compact specimens grown in special containers. It is not recommended to purchase seedlings with bare roots and weak shoots, they may not take root in a new place or this process will take too long.
In open ground, seedlings are planted in spring or autumn. The dimensions of the planting pit should be twice the size of the earthen coma, approximately 50 * 50 cm. The soil removed from the planting pit is mixed with compost. Part of the resulting mixture is laid out on the bottom in the form of a slide, then the seedling is lowered, straightening the roots, and the hole is covered with the remaining earth, lightly tamping. Then the soil is plentifully shed and mulched.
Location in the garden
For folded viburnum, it is necessary to allocate separate areas, allowing the shrub to grow unhindered and demonstrate its unusually beautiful crown. It can be planted near other ornamental shrubs and trees, but with a distance of at least 2, 5-3 m. The bright autumn foliage of the folded viburnum will perfectly fit into the automnalia, therefore, the culture will be appropriate in a seasonal flower garden. Viburnum is combined with dogwood, palmate, sakura, tulips, daffodils and other plants.
