Curly mint (lat. Mentha crista) belongs to herbaceous perennials of the genus Mint of the family Lamiaceae. It is found naturally in European countries and the USA. Nowadays it is actively cultivated in Russia, Ukraine and other countries to obtain medicinal and food raw materials. Often this species is called spearmint.

Characteristics of culture

Curly mint is represented by perennial plants reaching a height of 100 cm. Stems are formed in huge numbers, topped with wide, ovoid, curly foliage, pubescent over the entire surface. By the way, the culture got its name for the curly foliage.

The flowers are small, lilac-pink, collected in inflorescences, which, in turn, form false whorls. Curly mint bloom is observed in mid-late July, and lasts for 2-3 months. Fruiting is active, annual, the fruits ripen in the first or second decade of October.

Curly mint belongs to the category of frost-resistant crops, and according to this characteristic, it prevails over peppermint. But unlike long-leaved mint, the species in question is less picky about location and soil conditions. Mint is immune to diseases and pests.

Today in the garden market you can find the variety of curly mint "Capuchin". It is characterized by low growth (up to 60 cm), ovoid curly leaves and numerous decorative lilac-pink flowers that form spike-shaped inflorescences.

The variety is famous for its bright aroma. Still would! Plants contain a huge amount of essential oil, designed to serve the benefit of human beauty and health. In addition, the essential oil obtained from the Capuchin variety is used in the confectionery industry and in the manufacture of medicinal teas.

Usage

Unlike its closest brother, peppermint, the species in question has a more delicate aroma, it also has a mild effect, it does not have a menthol cooling taste, therefore it is used in the production of medicines for children.

By the way, in addition to medicines, children can safely be given water containing one drop of curly mint essential oil and a spoonful of honey. This composition improves mood, increases appetite, reduces tearfulness and eliminates colic. However, before giving the child a healing solution, it is important to consult a doctor in order to rule out troubles, for example, allergies.

Adults can use spearmint and mint essential oil to relieve pain from sprains and bruises, create healing baths, and as a sedative. It is also suitable for those who suffer from increased acidity of the stomach, it neutralizes the action of acid, and also improves the functioning of the digestive tract.

Curly mint is also used in the culinary field. It is often included in vegetable mixes for a wide variety of stews and soups. In some countries, it is added when pickling white cabbage, along with fresh apples, cranberries and carrots. Often, curly mint is used to make cookies and sauces designed to improve the taste of meat dishes.

But Estonians use curly mint in the preparation of kvass, both for drinking and for dressing okroshka. In European countries, dry leaves of the plant are included in recipes for fish dishes and salads. Curly mint gives absolutely all dishes a special taste and unique aroma.
