Red lipstick (lat. Mimulus cardinalis) - a representative of the Gubastic genus of the Norichnikov family. Another name is purple lipstick. The homeland of the species is considered to be North America. In the same place, the plant is found in natural conditions. He likes hills and areas near water bodies. The latter characteristic is due to the moisture-loving nature of the representatives of the genus, they are not afraid of wet areas, therefore they are often used to decorate areas located near water bodies.

Characteristics of culture

The red lipstick is represented by a perennial herb, which has a highly branched stem, covered over the entire surface with numerous hairs. Since the culture cannot boast of high frost-resistant properties, in Russia it is grown only as an annual, less often it is brought indoors for the winter. In the process of growth, the red lipstick forms beautiful compact bushes that do not exceed more than half a meter in height. They are endowed with green, veined, opposite, jagged foliage along the edge, having an ovoid shape.

The flowers in the culture under consideration have an unusual shape, which outwardly resembles the faces of monkeys, for which, by the way, the plant in its homeland is often called monkey flowers. They are tubular, red, equipped with long pedicels that emanate from the axils of the leaves. Blossoming of the red lipstick is long, occurs in early summer (usually the second decade of June) and lasts until mid-September, sometimes longer. The fruits of the culture are represented by two-celled capsules bearing many small seeds.

Currently, the red lipstick is actively used in breeding. Today, several interesting varieties are presented on the garden market, which every year win the love of flower growers and gardeners. Among them, the Rose Queen variety can be noted. It is characterized by compact bushes topped with large pink flowers decorated with dark dots. The Cardinal variety is no less beautiful. It boasts large red flowers that are covered in yellow dots.

Cultivation of culture

Most often, red lipstick is grown in seedlings. Sowing, in turn, is carried out in the third decade of March, in extreme cases - in the first decade of April. The seeds of the culture in question are small, therefore, they do not need to be embedded in the soil. It is enough to distribute them over the soil surface, lightly sprinkle them, conduct careful watering with a spray bottle and cover with foil or glass. It is important to remember that seeds should be sown only in a loose and light substrate, preferably with an admixture of well-washed river sand.

The optimum temperature for quick spitting of seeds is 18C, the minimum threshold is 15C. If these conditions are met, the seeds begin to germinate after a couple of days. With the emergence of 3-4 true leaves on the shoots, a pick is carried out in separate containers. At the same time, the first feeding is carried out. For these purposes, it is recommended to use potash fertilizers, but in small quantities, otherwise, still immature plants can be ruined.

Transplantation of red lipstick seedlings is carried out in the first decade of June, but before the plants are hardened, the hardening period is at least 1-1.5 weeks. It is preferable to plant the crop in well-lit areas with loamy soil, endowed with a weakly acidic pH reaction. When planting, take into account the distance between the seedlings, equal to 20 cm. Too often planting a red lipstick is not recommended.

Care

Crop care consists in standard manipulations - watering, weeding and feeding. At the initial stage, it is also recommended to pinch, which will enhance tillering. Watering, in turn, should be frequent, abundant. The soil must not be allowed to dry out. Top dressing should be done every 30-40 days using complex mineral fertilizers. This procedure will have a positive effect on the development of culture and the abundance of flowering.
