Garden acmella (lat. Acmella oleracea) - one of the most common species of the genus Akmella of the family Astrovye (or Compositae). Plants are also called garden spilantes, Indian cresson, oil cress. The homeland of the plant is considered to be South America. The species grows in natural conditions in the same place.
Characteristics of culture
Acmella vegetable garden is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 30 cm high. In tropical countries it is grown as a perennial, in Europe and Russia - as an annual. The stems of the plant are creeping, dark green, sometimes with a reddish tint. By the way, a reddish tint appears on plants that grow in the open sun. The foliage is wide, deltoid, serrated, pointed at the ends. Inflorescences in the form of pompons, endowed with an orange eye, consist of tubular flowers, formed on long peduncles.
Growing conditions
Akmella garden prefers areas with diffused light, a light shade will not harm the plant. Soils are preferable light, loamy, sandy loam, with a slightly acidic pH reaction. It is advisable to plant the crop in areas protected from cold northerly winds. Lowlands with stagnant cold air and precipitation are unacceptable.
Acmella is grown most often through seedlings. Sowing is carried out in April. The seeds are not embedded in the soil, but only scattered over the surface and slightly sprinkled with soil. The plant develops very quickly, after sowing the seeds, the seedlings, ready for planting in the ground, are formed within a month. An important condition for the active development of acmella garden is a moderately moist soil, therefore, after planting in the ground, it is better to mulch the soil.
Usage
