Vascular bacteriosis of cabbage

Vascular bacteriosis of cabbage affects almost all types of this crop. Savoy, cauliflower, Peking and white cabbage, broccoli, kohlrabi, as well as rutabagas, turnips, mustard and a number of other cabbage plants are especially susceptible to this ailment. And various cabbage crops can become infected with vascular bacteriosis at absolutely any stage of their development. If you do not fight this disease, then crop losses in some seasons can reach 90 - 100%

A few words about the disease

The earliest symptoms of this disease usually appear on the edges of cabbage leaves. Their tissues begin to turn yellow, turning into "parchment" to the touch, and the veins on the leaves turn black at the same time.

In the last stages of vascular bacteriosis, the black color from the affected cabbage leaves can easily spread up to the main stems, and the darkened vascular system will be clearly visible up or down along these stems. In this regard, in order to identify the presence of the disease, scars formed on the stems after removal of the infected leaflets are often examined. In the affected cultures, the characteristic black circles of the vascular bundles will be clearly visible on such scars. Further, as the disease develops, the darkening of the vascular system will also affect the upper leaves - in any part of them, chlorotic lesions can form as a result of systemic infection.

Young plants affected by the ill-fated vascular bacteriosis gradually die off prematurely, and older plants are characterized by extremely uneven development. At the same time, heads of cabbage lose their presentation and are underdeveloped.

The spread of such an unpleasant ailment can occur with wind or rain, as well as with plant debris and seeds. In case of excessive watering or rather heavy rains, the stomata of plants serve as "gates" for the penetration of a destructive infection. And then, through the main veins and leaf petioles, the bacteria get to the juicy stumps. Although this route of infection is not the only one - through any damage to the root system, the causative agent of vascular bacteriosis can also easily penetrate into vegetation.

To a large extent, the development of this ailment is facilitated by damage to vegetation by insects, as well as the establishment of humid warm weather during the growing season. As a rule, vascular bacteriosis develops very actively when the soil is saturated with moisture. Already ten to twelve days after the infection has entered the plants, the first symptoms will appear (this usually happens when the thermometer reaches 27 - 30 degrees).

All varieties of radish, cabbage, mustard, radish, rutabagas, turnips, as well as all weeds that represent the numerous cabbage family are the reserve plants of the hated vascular bacteriosis.

How to fight

Cabbage seeds for sowing should only be taken from healthy crops. However, in this case, their presowing treatment will obviously not be superfluous. A good effect is given by keeping the seeds for twenty minutes in water, the temperature of which is about fifty degrees. Then the seeds are cooled for three minutes, and then they are dried so that they become free-flowing again. First of all, it is recommended to pay attention to cabbage varieties resistant to vascular bacteriosis.

When planting cabbage seedlings, experts advise dipping its root system in the so-called "chatterbox" made from mullein and clay with the preparation "Fitolavin-300" (0.2%). And if the first signs of vascular bacteriosis appear after the seedlings are planted, then they are sprayed with a Planriz solution (0.1%) with the addition of surfactants.

When growing cabbage, it is extremely important to observe the rules of crop rotation - earlier than three years later, this crop should not be returned to the previous beds.

It is imperative to eliminate plant residues from all beds in a timely manner. The control of weeds from the cabbage family will also help reduce the likelihood of accumulation of infection. And, of course, for the same purpose, it is no less important to fight against numerous pests of cabbage crops.
