The fungus is the most dangerous enemy of wooden buildings. If suddenly a characteristic white fluff began to appear on the floorboards and on the logs of the walls, it means that the house was attacked by a fungus. And after some time, this fluff will begin to gradually change its color to yellowish, pinkish or even lilac. How to deal with this unpleasant phenomenon?
Consequences of fungal attacks
With the subsequent unhindered development of the fungus, the wood will begin to be covered with gray films with a pronounced silvery sheen that are clearly visible to the eye. As a result, the specks will begin to darken and crumble. The harmful fungus is especially merciless to soft wood species.
Favorite locations of the fungus are damp rooms in which various building materials or firewood are stored. Both of them must be carefully examined from time to time, and if suspicious specks are found on firewood, logs or planks, it would be better to say goodbye to them.
What about the surviving building materials?
In order to protect the surviving wooden building materials from the fungus, it will not hurt to treat them with any of the preventive lubricants described below. To prepare the first lubricant, copper sulfate is diluted with wood vinegar in a ratio of 1:20. And to prepare the second lubricant, salicylic acid is mixed with denatured alcohol in a ratio of 1:10. Special care must be taken when using the second mixture as it is flammable.
By the way, it is recommended to process new wooden boards purchased for subsequent laying on the floor or decorating the walls with similar mixtures. It is also not forbidden to additionally process them with sodium fluoride.
How to deal with a fungus?
To defeat the fungus, many summer residents use a ten percent solution of copper sulfate or a fifteen percent solution of ferrous sulfate. You can warm up the affected areas and over an electric reflector or over gas. If the boards are hopelessly damaged, it is best to replace them with new ones and prudently treat them with a preventive composition.
A ten percent solution of sodium fluoride also helps in the fight against fungus. When processing with this tool, special attention should be paid to areas located near the water supply or drainpipes, as well as to those areas where the tree is in contact with the ground.
The following composition can be prepared to combat fungus: table salt in the amount of 950 g is diluted in boiling water together with boric acid (50 g). Damaged areas are lubricated with this composition up to five times (for this procedure, use a sponge or brush).
How else can you get rid of the fungus?
If the surface of the wood begins to change its color or blue begins to appear on it, you should treat the wood with a bleach specially designed for it as soon as possible. If mold begins to appear on the walls, then it must be cleaned off. And upon completion of such processing, the room does not interfere with thoroughly drying and ventilating. At the same time, it is important to take into account that it may not be possible to get rid of the fungus at once, and therefore the most optimal option would be step-by-step whitening. And in order to prevent the reappearance of mold on the walls, after removing the fungus, it is necessary to cover their surface with a high-quality antiseptic composition.
In the event that the mold that has appeared on the wood has already become old, it is necessary to remove all the areas affected by it. This is done exclusively mechanically: the mold is scraped off or chopped off with an ax. If the lesions are too deep, then such areas will have to be completely replaced.
Thoroughly cleaned wood in several passes is also treated with special chemical compounds. Solutions of ammonium fluorosilicate, sodium fluoride and zinc chloride help to achieve the best effect. It is important not to forget to cover all surfaces from which the fungus was removed with a protective antiseptic composition.
