Fragrant violet (lat. Viola odorata) - an elegant perennial herb of the genus Violet (lat. Viola) of the family Violet (lat. Violaceae). The compact, delicate and fragrant plant will be the perfect decoration for a rocky garden. Since ancient times, the fragrant violet, not inferior in its abilities to the tricolor violet, has been used by folk healers to combat human ailments.
What's in your name
The origin of the Latin name of the genus, with which the names of all species of this community begin, has several versions. One of them is the translation of the word "Viola" as "purple", which is quite appropriate, since most of the flowers of numerous species are colored in different shades of purple.
The species name “odorata” is based on a shorter word meaning “smell”, hence the Russian translation “fragrant”.
Description
The underground part of the Fragrant Violet is a thick creeping rhizome, from which a whole network of lateral roots departs. It is it that supports the perenniality of this species, releasing numerous basal rosettes from leaves with long pubescent petioles to the surface of the earth. The stem, in a species familiar to other plants, does not have a fragrant Violet. They are replaced by the so-called stolons - thin and long aerial shoots that have the ability to take root, creating a whole clump that will bloom the next year.
The basal rosette consists of simple leaves with a crenate-serrate edge, which gives a decorative appearance to the leaf plate. The shape of the leaves is round-cordate. A pair of ovate-lanceolate stipules are located at the base of each leaf. The leaves remain green even under the snow, being a year-round decoration of a perennial plant.
In the axils of the leaves, densely pubescent peduncles are born, bearing single fragrant flowers. Flowering occurs twice: in the spring, covering April and May, and the second time by the end of August. Five sepals and five petals take part in the construction of an irregular (zygomorphic) flower, the symmetry of which takes place only in relation to one possible vertical plane. The petals can be white or different shades of purple. The lower petal of the flower is equipped with a brave spur and is somewhat wider than the other four. The side petals are similar to the ears of a baby elephant. In the center of the flower is a white spot, on which the purple veins of the lower petal create a bearded-geometric pattern. The stamens are hidden behind thin brushes of thick white hairs.
In addition to flowers with open petals, which are born in early spring, when the crown of trees still does not give shade, Fragrant violet forms cleistogamous flowers, more like flower buds, inside which, behind closed doors, self-pollination occurs during the period when the crowns of trees drop a thick shadow to the ground …
The fragrant violet is a natural barometer that informs about the approach of rain with its flower petals, which, anticipating bad weather, press against each other to protect their reproductive parts from the heavenly moisture that is destructive for them.
The fruit is a tricuspid spherical capsule with small seeds.
Usage
Decorative year-round green leaves with jagged edges, funny faces of petal flowers, pleasant aroma and compactness of undersized rosettes of leaves turn the Fragrant Violet into a popular plant for rocky gardens.
Fragrant flowers willingly share their nectar with bees.
The fragrant violet has been used by people for healing from ailments since legendary times, as evidenced by written sources of ancient times. Her healing abilities are so wide that they are able to normalize the work of almost any human organ.
