Violet Vittrok (lat. Viola x vittrockiana) - a hybrid perennial herb of the genus Violet (Lat. Viola) of the Violet family (Lat. Violaceae). Fans of the plant have another name - Garden Pansies. The large and bright flowers of Violet Vittrok will decorate any flower garden with their presence, puzzling the summer resident with their thinking faces. What thoughts rush through the flowers, looking at the world with wonder and delight?

What's in your name

Although the generic name "Viola" is most often interpreted as "Violet", Vittrok's Violet, contrary to natural tradition, absorbed all the colors of our amazing and vibrant world into its petals. And it happened with a plant with the help of human hands, capable not only of destroying the world, created not by them, but also of creating and diversifying it. Tireless breeders, crossing different natural species, for example, Viola tricolor, Viola altaica, Viola lutea and Viola cornuta, were able to give flower growers an amazing variety of colors.

The species epithet "vittrockiana" (Vittrock) preserves the memory of the Swedish botanist, who devoted part of his activity to this species of Violet and gave the descendants a book on the history of this plant. The name of this man is Veit Wittrock (Veit Brecher Wittrock, years of life 1839 - 1914).

Freethinking symbol

In English-speaking countries, the plant is called "Pansy" or "Pansy Viola", which translates into Russian as "Pansies". Although the word "Pansy" is based not on the word "eyes", but the French word "Pensee", meaning "thought". The plant owes this name to the opened flower, the petals of which are covered with spots. The spots give the flower the appearance of a thinking human face. This appearance turned Pansies into a symbol of free thinking.

Description

From fibrous underground roots, semi-spreading or compact branchy bushes of Vittrock Violets, whose height varies from 15 to 40 centimeters, appear in the world. A well-rooted perennial plant easily survives winter under the snow and rarely gets sick or has problems with harmful insects, thanks to its cold hardening.

The dark green leaves are equipped with a pair of lyre-shaped stipules and are arranged on petioles along the stem in the next order. Wide rounded teeth along the edge of the leaf plate (the so-called crenate edge) give the leaves a decorative openwork.

Single large flowers are born in the axils of the leaves, looking at the world with their funny thinking faces. What do they think about, preferring to sit in the shade on a hot afternoon? Man brought many new bright colors to the natural purple color of petals, significantly expanding the choice of gardeners who love to decorate their flower beds with certain color shades.

Pansy flowers are edible, and therefore can be used to decorate pastries and dessert dishes.

Small shiny seeds of the plant are hidden in the fruit, which takes the form of a three-chamber capsule.

Numerous varieties

Breeders have bred a huge number of different varieties of Pansies, from which each grower can choose a variety to his taste.

Cultivars vary in flower sizes ranging from super giant to small flowered; the color of flower petals, which can be monochromatic, or combine several paints on their surface in the form of spots, strokes, dots.

Different varieties have different relationships with frost, different flowering times.

Plants have in common a love for loose, fertile soil, moderately moist, but not soggy; shade tolerance; high resistance to diseases and insect pests.
