Perhaps this is one of the most dangerous and insidious diseases that can destroy all your seedlings: the black leg is completely unpretentious in choosing a place of residence and affects any seedlings, from flowers to vegetables
Moreover, this insidious disease can completely destroy all the seedlings you have grown in a few days. In this article, I want to share how to save seedlings from black leg.
The cause of the fungus
The fungus that causes this disease usually lives in the soil. Moreover, it does not matter whether it is purchased soil or soil taken from its own site, it can be both there and there. The fungus can feed on plant debris, and therefore remain viable for quite a long time. Under favorable conditions, the fungus migrates from the soil to the plant, clogs up the "vessels" and deprives the plant of nutrition. After that, the root part of the stem begins to darken, then a dried "constriction" appears and the plant dies.
Under what conditions does a black leg appear?
To activate and relocate to plants, this fungus needs special favorable conditions. What is meant by this phrase? Firstly, excessive soil moisture and stagnation of moisture in the upper layer of the soil, especially in the part where the plant stem touches the ground. Secondly, the wrong water temperature during irrigation, that is, the water is too cold. Thirdly, insufficient lighting, twilight or short daylight hours can lead to the development of a fungus. Fourth, acidic, including slightly acidic, soils. Fifth, too dense planting of plants, be sure to dive the seedlings on time! And the last is the constant fluctuations in the ambient temperature.
Control methods
The fight against blackleg is to prevent and rescue already infected seedling containers. Please note that if a black leg appears in a very small seedling, then it can no longer be saved, it is easier to remove it and reseed the seeds, taking preventive measures against the appearance of the fungus.
Let's start with prevention. Before sowing seedlings, be sure to disinfect the soil! You can bake it in the oven for half an hour at a temperature of at least 100 degrees Celsius, or spill it with boiling water several times and let it dry. You can also water the soil several times with a solution of potassium permanganate of medium strength or use special medicines to disinfect the soil, applying them strictly according to the instructions.
Seed preparation
Despite the fact that the fungus that causes the disease lives in the soil, it is advisable to treat the seeds with "immunostimulants" in order to increase resistance to various diseases. To do this, the seeds must be soaked in boric acid, a solution of potassium permanganate or soda, or specialized preparations.
After sowing in the ground, make sure that the soil is not overly moist. After sowing, it is advisable to pour a thin layer of sand, up to half a centimeter, on the surface of the soil, this will allow moisture to quickly seep out and not remain on the surface, in contact with the root part of the seedling trunk. If you accidentally poured water during watering, but there is no sand, then sprinkle the soil on top with crushed charcoal or ash, they will quickly absorb all excess moisture.
Attention! Water the plants only with water at room temperature, avoiding contact with the seedlings. If necessary, be sure to thin out or dive the seedlings!
If the fungus nevertheless begins to appear on the plants, then remove the affected plants along with the soil near them, this way you will save the rest of the plants in the container from this disease.
If the plants do get sick, then try to get a special remedy for fungus in a garden store and treat the seedlings and soil. After a while, when the seedlings get stronger, transplant them into disinfected soil.
