March does not yet indulge in warmth, but the spring sun is already warming up. And flower growers rush to their plots to improve the flower beds and remove winter shelters. Should you rush to remove the protection from the roses? And how did those specimens that did not shelter overwinter? Should we be afraid for them?

How did the roses overwinter with and without shelter?

Recently, winters are not as snowy and frosty as they used to be. And many growers leave their roses without shelter, limiting themselves only to pruning and high hilling. And in this way they chase two hares, freeing their time and hands from work on the shelter in the fall, and in the spring - not fooling themselves with its removal. Is it worth the candle?

Even if roses do not die in such conditions, it has been noticed that those plants that hibernate under a shelter still bloom better and more magnificently than those left without it.

In addition, in winter, temperatures often change quite abruptly - from mild thaws to harsh frosts. And in such conditions, when the ground freezes, the plant still suffers. But under cover, sudden changes in temperature are not so felt.

Moreover, hilling soil for the winter can do more harm than good. Because if this land gets wet during the thaw, and then freezes at subzero temperatures, the roses will turn black.

When to start taking cover

If you are still engaged in such work as sheltering roses for the winter, when the sun has warmed up, the question arises: when will you take it off? Warmth in March and April can be deceiving. Although the sun is shining, its warmth is still not enough to warm the earth.

Therefore, before starting to free the rosary from the shelter, first dig up the ground and check how frozen it is. When the soil is still firm, take your time to remove the cover. Because in such conditions, under the bright sun, roses can easily turn black. So it is better to remove the shelter only when the ground on the site thaws, and the roots can receive adequate nutrition from the soil. Then the plant will wake up and get stronger, and not burn in the sun.

How can you make sure that the ground is "ripe" and you can remove the shelter? In this case, it is very useful to be able to measure the temperature of the soil. When it rises, release the roses. One more nuance - it is better to do it in cloudy weather, so that the sun does not burn.

Revision of plants after removing the shelter

Overwintered roses are a must-see. Examine the trim points carefully. If you did everything right in the spring and pruned the plants to mature wood, then the tips should not freeze. When green unripe shoots remained, even under cover they could freeze and turn black. You should get rid of them as soon as possible.

It is even worse if the rot from them has passed to the part of the shoot that has matured last year. Then you need to cut it to healthy wood. How to determine that the wood is frozen underneath? Its color will tell about it. A brown tint indicates frost damage. This shoot should be cut back to the healthy white center of the wood. You also need to cut out shoots damaged by frost and brown at the edges.

How short is the cut of the rose? You can cut it off before the vaccination, leaving one stump. Don't spare the old bush. If it is damaged by frost, then the buds will no longer appear on it. But a short cut to healthy tissue gives the dormant kidneys a chance to awaken. And the rose can be saved.

Look closely for signs of mold. And if you find it, treat the flowers with fungicides. There is no need to rush to feed weakened plants. Until the earth warms up to 8 degrees Celsius, nutrients will not be absorbed. Another nuance associated with temperature - you should not carry out treatment with biological products until the air temperature rises to 15 degrees.
