Warm winter anomalies, record high temperatures in March baffle flower growers. When to open roses if the weather is ahead of climatic norms by a month? Get to know the opinion of experienced rose growers
When to take shelter off roses
Lack of snow, early warmth is not a reason to disassemble the insulating structures over the roses. It is necessary to wait for the earth to warm up, there are folk signs that speak of this. The most affordable way is to look at the condition of the birch. You can safely open roses when birch catkins have blossomed.
The root system of the tree does not respond to short abnormal weather antics. Only a sufficiently warmed earth gives a start to sap flow, catkins appear on the branches of a birch. This moment is the signal for the work in the rose garden.
In the Moscow region, roses are usually opened from mid to late April, in the Leningrad region a little later: late April to mid May. In the regions of Siberia, the Urals - mid-May-early June.
How to open roses
Spring is characterized by temperature fluctuations. Weather whims are manifested in the form of a contrast between day and night temperatures, recurrent frosts. Premature opening of roses can provoke the development of diseases arising from high humidity and cold. Active sun burns and injures the bark.
The gradual “undressing” of the bush allows softening the adaptation, avoiding the appearance of burns and diseases: one layer of lutrasil is removed. When the soil is warmed up by 10-15 cm, partial opening can be done, for this, insulation is removed from the north or east side. This helps prevent exposure to UV rays. After three days, the hiding place is completely removed.
Stress-free acclimatization takes place with the airing method. The event is held with the arrival of warm weather and after the snow has completely melted, is done within 3-4 days. The covering material is not removed, but the edge is lifted from the south side.
Such ventilation improves air circulation and promotes moisture evaporation. The soil under the bush is ventilated, dries up, the risk of developing putrefactive bacteria is reduced. Under a weakened, ventilated shelter, the rose will "breathe", will not get sick, will not resist and can stay calmly for up to a month and a half (from late March to early May).
Experienced florists recommend completely removing the shelter from roses on a cloudy, windless day and creating a temporary (2-3 days) shading from spruce branches (paper, thin agrotextile / non-woven fabric).
What to do with roses after opening
If for the winter the lower part of the rose was covered with soil, after removing the covering material, this layer is removed and the plant is examined. If diaper rash, cracks in the bark, diseases, frozen shoots are found, measures are taken to eliminate these problems.
Dried branches are brown-brown in color, they are removed. Diaper rash appears as dark red spots on the skin, they are sprayed with copper oxychloride. Without treatment, the middle of a uniform spot darkens, an infection develops, covering healthy parts of the bush. In case of large lesions, the shoot will have to be cut, if all branches are covered, the plant is dug up and destroyed.
Cracks in the bark are washed with a manganese solution or copper sulfate, then sealed with garden varnish. Mold plaque is removed mechanically and washed with soapy water, to which a little iron sulphate is added.
For fungal infections, diseases, the rose garden is treated with Medea or copper-containing fungicides: Ordan, Bordeaux liquid, copper sulfate solution (100-150 g + 10 l of water). Adherents of biological agents can use Gamair, Alirin, Fitosporin. When using these funds, you need to choose warm weather, since they "work" only with positive values (+ 8 … + 15). Don't forget about spring feeding!
Early spring requires us to be sensible about weather anomalies. Rose lovers, be patient and don't open your roses ahead of time! Assess the weather in your region, check out long-term forecasts, watch the blossoming of birch catkins.
