Juicy, spicy-tasting radish is one of the first fresh vegetables to appear on our table in early spring. This is a champion among early maturing crops. Some varieties allow harvesting as early as 20-25 days after sowing. Under what conditions can you provide yourself with this useful vitamin products from early spring to late autumn?
Site requirements
Usually, radish is not allocated to a separate area, it is used as a lighthouse compacting crop in the aisles of carrots, onions and other vegetables, the shoots of which appear only 15-20 days after sowing. During this time, the radish is almost ready for harvesting. Root vegetables are harvested as they ripen, without delay, so that they do not interfere with the development of neighboring vegetables.
However, you need to consider the preferences of the vegetable:
• Areas with sandy loam and light loamy soils are suitable for it.
• It belongs to the cabbage family and, like many of its early maturing relatives, does not like fresh manure in the soil.
• The best predecessors for it are carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, peas.
• It is good if humus or rotted peat compost was introduced in the fall (about 3 kg per 1 square meter).
• If the land has not been cultivated in advance, before planting radishes, the soil is fertilized with ammonium nitrate, superphosphate and potassium salt.
The site is chosen well-lit, protected from the wind. An ideal choice would be a place on the south side of the buildings. In the shade, the plants stretch out. The same disadvantage is seen with heavily thickened crops.
Seed preparation
To obtain uniform friendly shoots, the seeds are calibrated. First of all, deformed, too small specimens are discarded. Then, in a saline solution, the remaining low-quality seeds are determined. The seed is kept in a glass with a solution for 5-7 minutes. The part that did not sink to the bottom and float to the surface is not suitable for sowing.
To accelerate germination, the seed is soaked in clean water for a day.
Sowing radish in greenhouses
To get radishes in March, seeds are sown in a greenhouse at the end of February. For this:
1. Fill the greenhouse with heated manure.
2. A layer of sod land and humus about 15 cm thick is poured on top of the biofuel.
3. Early ripening seeds are sown according to the scheme with a feeding area of 4x5 cm, mid-ripening seeds - 5x6 cm.
4. The greenhouse is covered with frames, the top is insulated with mats.
5. When the seedlings hatch, in the daytime the mats are removed and the greenhouse is ventilated.
Crop care consists in warm watering, weeding, timely thinning. Remember that radish is a moisture-loving crop.
If the plants are not thinned out in time, do not give access to light, they are stretched. This leads to lower yields. You can correct the situation by adding earth to the cotyledon leaf.
Outdoor radish
Optimal conditions for the development of radish is an air temperature of about + 18 … + 20 ° С. But it also withstands light frosts down to –5 ° С. As soon as the weather is right, radishes are sown in the open field at several times with an interval of 7-12 days. Then you will be provided with an even, constant supply of fresh produce. Sowing continues until September.
Radish is embedded in narrow sowing furrows to a depth of 1.5-2 cm. The distance between furrows is not less than 7 cm. The seeding rate is about 5 g per 1 square meter. For example, no more than 15 g is placed in a matchbox. After sowing, the furrows are covered with humus mulch.
If necessary, seedlings are thinned so that the distance between early ripening plants is about 5 cm, mid-ripening plants are at least 7 cm. After this procedure, the first fertilizing with ammonium nitrate is applied and watering is carried out. The second feeding is given a week later.
