Mixborder in the country

This type of flower garden is the most suitable for summer cottages. But its creation will take at least three years, until a complex and surprisingly beautiful combination of plants turns into a single slender organism, delighting with its flowering throughout the summer season. Mixborder is not easy to perform, it requires certain knowledge and artistic taste. Today, gardeners have a lot of helpers to create such beauty on their site in the form of books and the World Wide Web

What is a mixborder

A mixborder is like a wide rabatka, the size and shape of which can be very different. Ornamental plants are located on its territory in small groups, creating a single ensemble of separate picturesque spots.

The main quality of the mixborder is its picturesqueness from spring sunny days to golden autumn. This is achieved by the correct selection of neighbors in the flower garden. The ornament of the leaves of some plants creates a background that emphasizes the flowering of others; the silhouette of the bush, the color of the stems of the third are combined harmoniously, creating an ever-changing living beauty. Plants are selected in such a way that the end of flowering of one coincides with the beginning of flowering of the other. But even in the period when there are no flowering plants, the decorativeness of the mixborder is supported by beautiful carved leaves, the color range of the stems, and the presence of spectacular buds.

Several important points

The advantage of a mixborder over other types of flower beds is its democratic nature in relation to its own size. Its length, width and shape can be very different. Moreover, the less strict the geometry of the flower garden, the more bizarre its lines, the more original and interesting it looks. But some points should be taken into account when arranging a mixborder:

• The choice of a site for a mixborder device should provide for a good view of the flower garden from any rest points of the summer cottage.

• The selection of plants should provide a decorative mixborder for the entire period of your stay in the country.

• Do not attract plants, the flowering period of which will come after the end of the summer season and your departure.

Mixborder plan

Any business starts with a plan. We take a notebook sheet in a cage and sketch out a plan of a flower garden from perennials, biennials and annuals already at our disposal, adding to them those that can be purchased without unnecessary hassle in a store or from friends and neighbors.

Having chosen a place for a mixborder in a summer cottage, we determine its shape, length and width and draw its outline on paper. Having divided the width of the drawn contour into three parts, we begin to arrange the plants we have at our disposal, distributing them in height. Plants growing to 0.8-1.2 meters are placed in the background; from 40 to 70 centimeters - in the middle ground; up to 30 centimeters high - in the foreground.

Mixborder base

Of course, perennial herbaceous plants or undersized ornamental shrubs are best suited for the base of a mixborder.

But perennials such as bulbous, blooming in early spring (in the middle plan, these are daffodils and tulips; in the foreground, small-bulbous ones, for example, Muscari or mouse hyacinth), fading away, will leave empty spaces. Therefore, you need to think about what annuals or biennials you can fill these places. This, of course, will add work, but will preserve the decorativeness of the mixborder, make it brighter, richer, more alive.
