You come to the dacha to rest, but you will go out to the beds and the flower garden, and you will hang there until dusk. I have to rest on Monday at work, to the displeasure of colleagues and superiors. One of the options for saving time in the country is the Moorish lawn

Under the roof of your house

Why is the lawn with Russian wildflowers called "Moorish"?

The fact is that for the first time such lawns began to be planted in Spain and North Africa in the 7th-8th centuries. They were used to decorate the palaces of the emirs and caliphs of the Mauritanian states. Among the gardeners who adorned the palace territory were the Slavs, by the will of fate, abandoned in a foreign land. They diversified the neat European plantings with motley multicolored wildflowers.

Over time, the Moorish lawn in Europe gave way to green lawns and flower beds.

Centuries passed, and the lawn began to slowly return to its native Russian lands, but with a foreign name.

Pros of a Moorish lawn

* Needs a scythe or lawn mower only once during the summer season, in the fall, when the seeds are ripe and fall to the ground.

* With the correct selection of the composition of herbs and flowers, the lawn pleases the summer resident throughout the summer season.

* The natural multicolor of wildflowers instills the joy of being and the triumph of life.

* Plants of the lawn, being excellent honey plants, attract bees, butterflies, which enliven the lawn and make it even more elegant.

* Unpretentious to the composition of the soil, it feels equally well on fertile and poor soils. But he loves sunny meadows.

Cons of the Moorish lawn

The solid floral carpet makes it a little difficult to weed the lawn from the weeds that manage to infiltrate the realm of beauty.

Soil preparation

This is the most time consuming process when setting up a Moorish lawn. I am glad that you need to master it only once.

It is better to start the preparation of the selected meadow for the lawn in the fall, when it is possible to free the soil from weeds, stones and other debris more efficiently and without haste. Digging the ground to a depth of 30 centimeters, along the way to extract all the extra from it.

Sowing

In the land prepared in autumn from April to June (as the weather permits), seeds are sown. The soil must be moist. Specially selected seed mixes are available at the store. Connoisseurs of flower habits can choose the composition of seeds they need. The best contenders for a Moorish lawn are unpretentious wildflowers such as cornflowers, chamomile and cornflower, poppies, carnations, as well as garden flowers: large-flowered flax, calendula, echinacea, nemesia.

For even germination, it is recommended to mix the seeds with sand before sowing. One volume of seeds requires three volumes of sand. The seeding depth is from 1 to 5 millimeters. The soil above the seeds must be carefully rolled up. You can cover the sown surface with a non-woven material so that the conditions for seed germination are more favorable and the birds do not glue the seeds, preventing them from sprouting with herbs.

Lawn care

Caring for a Moorish lawn does not take much time. Virtually all care is periodic watering. Moreover, it is necessary to water from a watering can with a frequent sieve, especially after sowing. In the future, the so-called drip irrigation is preferable.

If necessary, removal of rare weeds.

In autumn, when the flower seeds are already ripe, the plants are mowed, leaving stems up to 10 centimeters high above the ground. For four to six days, the grass is left alone at the mowing site and then composted.

Placing the lawn

You don't need a lot of land to build a Moorish lawn. It can be sown around fruit trees, along hedges, in the front garden under the windows of the house, by the porch, in small areas on a green lawn.

Enjoy your holiday in collaboration with the Moorish lawn!
