A lawn is a grass cover that is created by sowing and growing specially selected perennial grasses, mainly cereals. The lawn can be both an independent element of landscape design and serve as a background for a landscape composition.

Lawn classification

Decorative lawn - the lawn, used mainly for decorative purposes, is set up in parks, squares, gardens.

Special lawn - such lawns are arranged on road slopes, river banks, parking lots.

Sports turf - is arranged on sports grounds (football field, golf course), such lawns must have special strength and quality.

For arranging a lawn in a garden plot, use

decorative lawn

Such a lawn is subdivided into several types:

Parterre or English lawn - such a lawn performs a purely decorative function, has a uniform surface and can serve as a basis for decorating a landscape composition. It must be of high quality and usually contain specially selected lawn grasses that tolerate low mowing, form a dense cover and grow well. The parterre lawn requires perfect, regular maintenance.

Sowing the lawn is desirable from April to September. In order for the lawn to please the eye with its beauty, you first need to prepare the ground. The soil should be perfectly flat and loose so that the water is evenly distributed over the lawn and does not stagnate. In order for the lawn to be ideal and weeds do not grow on it, it is advisable to prepare a clean sandy-peat, non-acidic soil, with the addition of fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium. The fertile layer should be at least 15-20 cm. In order for the lawn to be thick and beautiful, you should not choose dark, damp places, the site should be well lit and moderately moistened. Before sowing, the soil must be carefully dug up and loosened, then properly tamped.

The day of sowing should be chosen sunny and calm. The choice of herbs depends on the experience of the landowner. It is better for beginners to choose seeds of unpretentious grasses that are resistant to trampling and external factors (wheat grass, hedgehog, etc. - perennial grasses, cereal families, with dense, rough leaves), such herbs are used for sports lawns. Professionals choose more whimsical grasses (meadow bluegrass, bent grass, red fescue - these are downstream grasses, have thin soft leaves and grow densely), which should be perfect and painstaking care, such grasses, of course, give a perfectly smooth and dense grass cover of the lawn. After selecting the seeds, the top layer of the soil must be loosened thoroughly. Grass seeds should be sown evenly, paying attention to the edges of the lawns, it is better to plant a little more seeds there than in the center of the lawn. After evenly distributing the seeds, they need to be sprinkled with fertile soil by 1-1.5 cm, tamped well and poured with water. The first shoots of grass should appear on average after 10 days.

Ordinary lawn or garden lawn … It is grown from varieties of herbs that are resistant to external factors. Must have shade tolerance and durability. Used to decorate parks, squares, city gardens.

Wild lawn - a lawn of wild grass, weeds, which are constantly fed and mowed. Usually of poor quality but in good condition.

Moorish or flowering lawn - herbaceous cover, in which, in addition to low-growing cereal grasses, annual flowering plants are used. The lawn got its name because of its prevalence in Muslim countries. In contrast to the strict, neat English lawn, the Moorish lawn pleases the eye with colors and a variety of textures. In addition to perennial grasses, it contains many types of annual and perennial wild honey flowers that attract insects that turn the lawn into a colorful meadow. Caring for such a lawn is not difficult, it is mowed only once a year. The lawn is not particularly picky about the quality of the soil, the main thing is that there is sufficient moisture in the sunlight on the site.

Meadow lawn or natural - the lawn is overgrown mainly with wild plants. Such a lawn is usually arranged under the crowns of trees in the back of the garden. May be confused with a Moorish lawn due to the presence of flowers. The meadow lawn does not require careful maintenance and is cut no more than once a month.

On a note

When arranging a Mauritanian lawn on a plot, it should be borne in mind that most of the planted flowers may not grow, the reason for this may be the temperature regime, the quality of the seeds, which can result in unseeded bald areas of the lawn. Due to the poor germination of flowers, the lawn will most likely need to be sown every year.

When preparing the soil for planting a lawn, a sheet of plywood can be used for high-quality compaction of the earth. To do this, I lay the plywood on the loosened ground and walk on it, trampling down the top layer. If a piece of plywood is less than the required size of the lawn, it is shifted from one place to another.

The right place, soil and plants will help you achieve the perfect lawn. It is not necessary to adhere to a certain type and style of the lawn, because there is no limit to perfection, the main thing is that the process and the result are enjoyable.
