Lawns appeared in Russia during the time of Peter the Great and adorned mainly the gardens of the Russian nobility. But the real boom in lawn addiction came, perhaps, at the end of the twentieth century, and continues to this day. Now a living, green carpet can often be found on an ordinary six hundred square meters. However, it is not easy to grow even, juicy and fluffy grass

Sow or spread?

Before acquiring a lawn, many gardeners reasonably ask the question: use the seed method or buy ready-made rolls? The latter option is undoubtedly simpler, but also much more expensive. At the same time, the quality of roll products may be low. That is why it is imperative to be interested in the product certificate. In addition, some imported lawn rolls do not like ordinary garden soil, as they were grown in specially selected soil.

If it is necessary to cover a large area with grass, it is more advisable to use the seed method. You will have to tinker with it more, and patience will not hurt - after all, in all its glory, the seed lawn will delight you only in a year. When sowing a lawn, it is quite difficult to do without unevenly sown areas - the so-called bald spots. They are eliminated by repeated spot seeding.

The lawn is usually sown in a well-humid and warm soil - in early autumn or spring, when the plants have a period of active vegetation. When choosing seeds, it is necessary to take into account the purpose of the lawn and the peculiarities of the climate: delicate and decorative varieties are suitable for admiring and aesthetics, and wear-resistant grasses are suitable for playgrounds.

Don't forget about the base

The soil for the "green carpet" is carefully prepared in advance. First of all, weeds are uprooted, small debris and stones are removed, and treated with herbicides. Deep loosening is required to improve drainage and loosen excess compaction. Feed the soil with loam, peat, compost and sand (1: 2: 1: 2). The mixture can be mixed with earth or used as a base, after removing the top layer of soil beforehand. With soils of sandy and light organic matter and loam, a little more is needed, but if the soils are too heavy, then more peat and sand are needed. Superphosphate will not hurt either, and lime will help to increase the acidity of the soil.

Try to divert groundwater from the lawn area if it is at a depth of less than 50 cm. After digging, the surface of the earth is leveled with a rake crosswise. Remove irregularities and small pits with a special roller. The slope of the terrain should not exceed 30 degrees. While the sprouts have not sprouted, it is better to cover them with a net to protect the seeds from birds. Shoots appear in 10-14 days. Ten centimeter grass can already be trimmed a little.

Breathing and moisture

A freshly sown lawn should be watered for at least ten minutes daily. But you should not overdo it with watering, so that pits do not form and the seeds are washed out. For young, five-centimeter sprouts, watering is carried out daily, and the matured grass can be irrigated once every seven days. If the soil is sandy, then twice a week.

It is better to water the grass early in the morning or closer to the night. Automatic irrigation systems are most often used, but a regular watering can with a nozzle will do. With frequent and not abundant watering, the grass dries faster, turning into straw. Excess water activates pests and diseases.

An important stage in lawn care is piercing. This can be done with an ordinary pitchfork to a depth of 10-15 cm, special barbed rollers (aerator) or studded shoe nozzles. Such injections will help "ventilate" the lawn, rid it of too dense soil at the roots and better absorb nutrients. Otherwise, the grass will dry quickly.

Feed comprehensively

Top dressing is essential even for a healthy, perfect lawn. It should be done in spring and autumn. Nitrogen-phosphate-potassium fertilizers popular among gardeners may not be enough. It is better to use complex fertilizers. In addition, it is advisable to apply lime every four years to prevent soil acidification.

In addition to artificial fertilizers, you can also use organic matter. Mowed grass mulch will help replenish nitrogen reserves, rotted compost will replenish the lack of potassium, and bone meal will saturate the grass with phosphorus.

Haircuts cannot be avoided

Experts advise to trim the lawn as often as possible, but remove only the upper part of it to prevent rapid drying and improve root development. Too short grass is more vulnerable to weeds. Cutting is carried out regularly at the same height when the grass reaches 8cm. You can level the carpet until the first cold weather. In hot weather, it is hot, it is better to cut a haircut in the evening. Do not forget to comb the lawn with a rake during leaf fall and after winter. This activity will not only clear the "green carpet" of debris, but also make it easier to breathe.
