Every summer resident dreams of a good harvest of appetizing and juicy strawberries, but the harvests of these fragrant berries are not always really pleasing. In order for them to be truly impressive, it is important to learn how to properly care for a capricious berry and, of course, spoil it with good feeding in a timely manner. It is especially good to feed strawberries with boric acid and iodine! You can buy them in every pharmacy, they are very cheap, and the results from their use can impress even the most inveterate skeptic
How are boric acid and iodine useful for strawberries?
Boric acid will not only stimulate the growing strawberry bushes to bloom, but will also be an excellent help for strengthening flowers, as well as for increasing the number of fruit ovaries, which in turn will significantly increase the yield (at least by one third) and significantly improve the taste of berries. … And iodine, which is a powerful antiseptic, not only prevents the formation of harmful rot on strawberries, but also helps prevent a great many other misfortunes to which this very whimsical culture is susceptible. In addition, strawberry weevils absolutely do not tolerate the smell of iodine!
When to feed strawberries with boric acid and iodine?
Treatments usually begin in early spring, and in total they are carried out three times throughout the season, while the interval between such treatments and watering should be at least two weeks. As a rule, the very first treatment is carried out immediately, as soon as young leaves begin to form on the strawberries, and flower stalks will be seen near the bases of the bushes. Re-processing is carried out at the stage of protruding peduncles, but before the bud opening process begins. And the third treatment is always carried out after the long-awaited crop has been harvested. If berries are already ripening on the bushes, it is better to refrain from feeding.
Boric acid feeding
If the strawberry leaves are irregular and crooked, they are most likely lacking boron. In this case, it makes sense to feed the strawberries in the spring with a solution of boric acid, for the preparation of which half a teaspoon (one or two grams) of boric acid is carefully diluted in ten liters of water (it should be warmed up, since boric acid simply will not dissolve in cold), after which one gram of potassium permanganate is poured into the finished mixture. By the way, it is best to dilute boric acid in a couple of passes: first, a small amount of it is dissolved in hot water, after which the solution is poured into a watering can or a bucket. The total volume of the solution obtained by the above method should be enough for twenty-five or even thirty-five strawberry bushes.
Foliar dressing will also serve well. As soon as the bushes begin to gain color, it is important to try to have time to spray the flowers with a weak solution of boric acid (at the rate of 2 grams per ten-liter bucket of water). In this case, not only will a huge number of ovaries form on the bushes, but it will also be possible to avoid premature shedding of fruits!
Top dressing with iodine
In order not to burn the roots, it is recommended to thoroughly shed the strawberry beds just before iodine treatment. If the soil is already moist enough, then this is not necessary. At the same time, it is important not to forget that treatment with an iodine solution must be carried out immediately after its preparation, since iodine is endowed with the ability to quickly evaporate. And iodine is not always able to help plants planted on too poor soils.
It is especially good to treat strawberries with iodine in the spring: to prepare a solution, iodine is almost always taken at the rate of ten drops for every ten liters of water. It is best to use a 5% iodine solution for dressing, which can be watered not only under the bushes, but also from the watering can from above. Such dressings perfectly help to protect strawberry bushes from powdery mildew and destructive gray rot.
And during the flowering period of strawberries, foliar feeding with iodine will be very useful - usually preventive spraying is carried out at the start of flowering or even at the budding stage. A five percent solution of iodine in the amount of five to ten droplets is diluted in ten liters of water and the growing strawberry bushes are sprayed from a spray bottle. In this case, shampoo or liquid soap can act as a so-called "adhesive" (it will be enough to take one or two tablespoons). Such a solution will not only contribute to the good growth of strawberries in every possible way, but also provide it with reliable protection against various ailments (bacterial diseases or rot), as well as against harmful weevils. If the infection has already hit the berry bushes, then such a treatment will be an excellent deterrent for its further spread!
