Arctic spoon is one of the plants of the family called cabbage or cruciferous, in Latin the name of this plant will sound like this: Cochlearia arctica Schlecht. (Cochlearia fenestrata). As for the name of the arctic spoon family itself, in Latin it will be like this: Brassicaceae Burnett. (Cruciferae Juss.).

Description of the arctic spoon

The arctic spoon is also known under numerous popular names: spoon horseradish, baruch, sea salad and scurvy herb. The arctic spoon is a biennial succulent herb, which is one of a rather limited number of plants that have managed to adapt to the very harsh conditions of the tundra. It is noteworthy that in the first year, only the development of the rosette of basal leaves occurs. The leaves of this plant are simple, they are located on rather long petioles, endowed with a solid plate, they will be either oval or wide-triangular-ovoid. In the second year, a flowering stem will grow from the middle of the rosette of this plant, the height of which will fluctuate between fifteen and forty centimeters. In the upper part, such a stem will be branching. Stem leaves of arctic spoon beetle will be sessile, on the edge they can sometimes be endowed with rare blunt teeth. The flowers of this plant are quite small in size, they are painted in white tones, and are also endowed with a corolla, which will consist of four petals, the length of which is three and a half to four millimeters. There are only six stamens of this plant, and the pistil is endowed with an upper ovary, which consists of two carpels fused together. The flowers of the arctic spoon are collected at the top of the stem and branches in inflorescences-brushes. The fruits of this plant are round-ovoid pods that will sit on rather long stalks.

The flowering of the arctic spoon falls in the period from June to July. Under natural conditions, this plant is found everywhere in the polar-arctic zone along the coast of the Ice Ocean, as well as in the European part of Russia, along the Okhotsk coast, along the shores of the Baltic Sea, in Siberia to Chukotka and Kamchatka. For growth, this plant prefers elevated places, tundra, sandy shores and clay hills. It should be noted that sometimes the arctic spoon is cultivated as a vegetable plant in the north of Russia.

Description of the medicinal properties of the arctic spoon

The arctic spoon is endowed with very valuable healing properties, while for medicinal purposes it is recommended to use the basal leaves and grass of this plant. Grass includes flowers, stems and leaves. It is recommended to procure such raw materials in the period from May to July.

It is noteworthy that this plant cannot be called a rare plant, and for this reason, it is recommended to observe the usual precautions when collecting the arctic spoon, as with collecting any other plants.

The arctic spoon is endowed with a very valuable wound healing, anti-inflammatory, antiscorbutic, diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory, carminative and antihelminthic effect.

The herb infusion and fresh juice of this plant are recommended for use in case of scabies, scurvy, paralysis, lichen, as well as for various skin inflammations, which will be accompanied by itching. In addition, such funds are used for gout, cystitis, rheumatism, women's diseases, various diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory diseases.
