The decorative and fragrant racemose inflorescences of Lakfioli are very similar to the flowers of the Levkoy (or Mattiola) plant. They are even called "Yellow Levkoy". Unlike Mattiola, which blooms all summer, Lakfioli are more often distinguished by spring blooms, giving a pleasant aroma and a bright palette of colors
Rod Heirantus
A dozen species of annual or perennial dwarf shrubs
family Cabbage (Cruciferous) highlighted in
genus Heiranthus or Lakfiol … They are called semi-shrubs from the fact that they have a lignified base that gives rise to herbaceous shoots.
These shrubs are united by decorative flowering, which in most cases occurs in the spring, but there are species that bloom in summer and even in winter, if you give them shelter in your home.
The racemose inflorescences, collected from bright flowers, yellow, orange, pink, red, purple, exude a pleasant sweetish aroma, attracting beneficial insects to the garden. If Levkoi also grows in the garden at the same time, then the crossing of plants is possible, after which it is not clear whether it is Lakfioli, or Levkoi.
Varieties
* Lakfiol alpine (Cheiranthus alpinus) is a medium-sized plant, reaching 40 cm in height, has dark lanceolate leaves and sulfur-yellow flowers on an unbranched peduncle. Gives its fragrant bloom in spring. Many different forms have been bred, in which the yellow color takes on different shades, and there are also purple flowers.
* Lakfiol Cheri (Cheiranthus cheiri) is a taller species, growing up to 70 cm. It has dark green pubescent lanceolate leaves, decorated with simple or double flowers of all colors. It can be yellow or brown flowers with a golden sheen, brown-purple or brown-red.
* Lakfiol is changeable (Cheiranthus mutabilis) - stands out from the row of spring-blooming Lakfioli, giving flowering to gardeners from spring to July. Moreover, at the beginning of flowering, the color of the flowers is lighter. Then the color is saturated, becoming red, purple or bronze. Shoots grow up to 90 cm in height and are covered with pubescent leaves of a linear-lanceolate shape.
* Lakfiol Alliona (Cheiranthus allionii) - not only breeders breed hybrid plants. Sometimes nature itself is engaged in their creation. Lakfiol Alliona is such an example of the creative activity of nature. Plant height varies from 30 to 80 cm. Spring-summer flowering presents the world with racemose apical inflorescences, consisting of bright orange flowers that stand out against the background of lanceolate leaves. Gardeners continued the creativity of nature, creating several garden forms that increased the number of shades of yellow and orange in the decoration of the plant.
Growing
Lakfiol is a very democratic plant that can grow in open ground, on terraces and balconies, and also as a houseplant. Love for the sun is combined with a tolerance for partial shade.
In general, a thermophilic plant, as the practice of cultivation has shown, tolerates frosts perfectly, but in very harsh winters it is safer to bring the plant indoors for the winter. It can even bloom profusely throughout the long winter if you place the plant pot on a sunny windowsill.
The soils are preferably fertile, rich in organic matter (with the exception of fresh manure), loose and well-drained, neutral (acidic soil leads to root rot). Watering is needed only when the soil dries up. In the spring-summer period, once every two to three weeks, watering is combined with mineral feeding.
To maintain the appearance, remove damaged leaves and wilted flowers.
Reproduction
Although Lakfiol is considered a shrub, it is propagated in spring
sowing seeds … Such plants bloom next spring, for which they are moved to boxes for the winter and removed to a cool room until spring.
