Tomatoes: growing and care

Reproduction of tomatoes by seedlings has its undoubted advantages - it is both an earlier harvest and ripening of fruits in a short summer. However, if the conditions of the region allow, you can also use the seedless tomato growing technique. Among the advantages of this method are stronger plants that are resistant to such troubles as an unexpected cold snap or long dry periods. In addition, they are not so often affected by diseases and are suitable for later work on harvesting conservation

A seedless tomato growing technique

Sowing tomato seeds right in the garden is carried out from the end of April and in the first decade of May. For this, small holes are arranged, keeping a distance of about 70 cm between them. At least 5, and preferably 10 seeds are thrown into each hole. The soil is covered with a thickness of about 2 cm. After that, it is recommended to mulch your crops.

When seedlings appear on the surface of the soil, the beds need to be loosened, weeding and thinning of the seedlings should be done. There is no need to rush to immediately remove all excess tomatoes. To begin with, 4-5 plants are left at each planting site. The final thinning of the plantings is done when each tomato develops real leaves and it will be possible to select a couple of the strongest ones. They are left in the beds.

Care of transplanted seedlings

However, it is not always possible to do without seedlings. And it's time to remember what kind of care is required in spring for plants transplanted into open ground, grown in winter in greenhouse conditions. Such measures consist in the systematic loosening of the beds and hilling plants, timely feeding and watering, as well as pest control and disease prevention.

The first deep loosening is performed not earlier than the seedlings take root in the garden. If you ignore this point, it will be difficult for plants to develop a deep root system. And this will make it difficult to provide the bushes with water and, along with it, nutrients. Then, during the summer period, after watering and fertilizing, it will be necessary to carry out at least 3-5 more loosening to a depth of approximately 6-8 cm.

When transplanting seedlings into the ground, you can find tubercles at the bottom of the stem. Additional roots can still develop from them. Therefore, one and a half to two weeks after transplanting, it is recommended to spud the seedlings. This procedure is performed after watering. It is advisable to indicate the date of hilling in your gardener's diary, so as not to forget to repeat it two to three weeks later.

Tomatoes do not like high humidity. Therefore, they need to be watered in a special mode: not too often and immediately with an abundant volume of water. If you part with humidifications and pour in a little water, this can achieve the development of fungal diseases.

Watering is planned for such periods of plant development as flowering and fruiting, as well as during the already mentioned procedures - before loosening, hilling, with the introduction of mineral dressings. In total, 5-7 soil moistening is done during the growing season. The first watering should be done 2-3 times before the start of fruiting. They are carried out at intervals of a week and a half. The remaining rate is replenished in the process of fruiting with the same time interval.

Watering is done at the root so that drops do not fall on the leaves. The first irrigation is carried out with the calculation of 0.5-0.8 liters of water for each bush. Gradually, the volume of water is increased, bringing it to 4-5 liters per one bush.

Do not forget about feeding tomatoes. For the first time, a mixture of organic matter and mineral fertilizers is prepared for this. You can use mullein or bird droppings with superphosphate. The next fertilization of the beds is carried out every three weeks.
