Silver-gray twigs with green leaves that look like olive leaves, juicy yellow-orange shiny berries beckon to you. But do not rush to pick the amber berries, be careful, because the sea buckthorn has armed its branches with sharp thorns, just waiting for someone else's invasion in order to hurt the uninvited guest more painfully
Genus sea buckthorn
Shrubs or small trees of the genus Sea-buckthorn (Hippophae), the branches of which are usually equipped with sharp thorns, shed their narrow-lanceolate leaves for the winter, similar to the leaves of a weeping willow or the leaves of an olive tree.
Juicy yellow-orange berries are a valuable vitamin remedy. They are harvested in the fall, after the first light frost, which makes them more durable, not flowing out of juice when harvested.
Varieties

Sea buckthorn buckthorn or buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is the most common species in nature with leaves that look like the leaves of trees absolutely not related to sea buckthorn: willow and olive. Sea buckthorn has horizontally spreading branched roots, a short trunk with spiny rigid branches and gray-silver branches. The upper side of the lanceolate simple leaves is green and the underside is silvery gray.
This plant is dioecious, that is, male and female flowers grow on different trees, perplexing gardeners who have planted one tree in the garden and have been waiting for many years for the desired vitamins to appear on the tree. True, now breeders have bred varieties for which there is no problem with pollination.
Flowers appear in April-May, simultaneously with the opening of the leaves. They stick around the twigs with a thick light yellow robe, giving their appearance to the plant. In September, sweet and sour juicy drupes ripen, just as densely as the flowers that stick around the twigs. The fruits are high in vitamins and valuable organic acids. Known useful sea buckthorn oil is obtained from seeds.

Willow sea buckthorn (Hippophae salicifolia) - Wild buckthorn in the Himalayas is grown less frequently. The tree has dimensions that are smaller than that of the previous species. On the drooping and less thorny branches of the tree, there are gray-green leaves.
•
Tibetan sea buckthorn (Hippophae tibetana) is another type of sea buckthorn native to the Himalayas. Used by breeders to develop new varieties.
Growing
Sea buckthorn is a plant that is very easy to grow. Therefore, it is in demand not only as a fruit crop, but also as a decorative one. It is widely used in landscaping settlements, planting in single, group plantings, as well as arranging from it live impenetrable hedges, forest shelters, strengthening slopes and crumbling slopes.
Sea buckthorn loves sunny places, but it can grow in partial shade. Not capricious in relation to air temperature, withstanding heat and frost.
Sea buckthorn has no complaints about the composition of the soil, but it is important that the soil is well drained. It is drought tolerant and therefore does not require special watering.
When planting plants, the distance between plants in hedges is left about half a meter, and in forest shelter belts, three times more. Hedges require pruning in August. With other types of planting, you can do without pruning, removing only damaged, dry and poorly located branches.
Reproduction
Most often, sea buckthorn is propagated by seeds, at the risk of growing only female or only male trees, since it is impossible to determine the sex of the future plant from the seeds. In addition, they propagate by offspring, layering and grafting.
Enemies
Sea buckthorn withstands the onslaught of enemies quite staunchly, very rarely succumbing to their attacks.
