Growing sea buckthorn on your garden plot is beneficial in all respects. First of all, this is a high-yielding crop - look at the branches of the tree, how densely they are covered with bright, as if filled with sunlight, berries! In addition, it is a frost-resistant plant. And on top of that, its fruits have great nutritional value and healing qualities. Therefore, if this wonderful plant is not yet in your garden, it's time to think about getting it

Conditions for growing sea buckthorn

Reproduction of sea buckthorn is carried out in two terms. In the spring, they are taken for planting seedlings, and in the fall they begin to propagate by cuttings. It should be borne in mind that sea buckthorn is a dioecious plant. And if you expect to get a harvest, you need to have at least 1 male tree in the garden for 8-10 female trees.

Sea buckthorn loves sunlight, but is afraid of cold winds. Therefore, for planting seedlings, it is necessary to allocate sufficiently illuminated areas, but at the same time it is necessary that there is protection from gusty air currents and drafts.

Another subtlety is the composition of the soil. Sea buckthorn is not a capricious plant in this respect, but, like any other plant, it has its own preferences. And for the development of your pets to please the eye, it is better to place them in areas with a loose mechanical structure of the soil. It can be sandy loam or loam. It grows well on earth with a slightly acidic reaction.

Planting sea buckthorn seedlings

For planting in a permanent place, it is best to purchase seedlings at the age of 2-3 years. It is convenient when the sea buckthorn is placed in rows. For this, the row spacing is left approximately 4 m, and the distance between the planting pits in a row is made about 2-3 m. Planting should be performed with the root collar deepening approximately to the length of the palm. So the root system will increase in volume faster.

If it is not possible to allocate such a large area only for sea buckthorn, where one male will be placed surrounded by female plants, then they go to such a trick as inoculation. That is, a male plant is implanted into the crown of a female tree by grafting.

Reproduction of sea buckthorn by cuttings

Reproduction by lignified cuttings begins in late autumn. For this, young twigs are selected, with a diameter no thicker than a goose feather. But when cutting cuttings, you need to grab last year's wood. The length of the planting material is approximately 12-15 cm.

Planting cuttings for rooting is carried out in damp soil. The holes for them are made at a distance of about 15 cm. They are buried in the ground so that no more than one pair of buds remains to look out. Then the nursery is mulched. To do this, use moss or sawdust - these materials perfectly retain the necessary soil moisture.

A noticeable growth of cuttings will be already next year. And two years after planting, the seedlings can already be moved from the nursery to a permanent place.

Sea buckthorn is propagated not only by lignified, but also by green cuttings - this year's shoots. For such purposes, cut twigs 18-20 cm long. They are packed in polyethylene and moistened. After that, the lower leaves are removed, the sections are refreshed and they are treated with a root formation stimulator.

This planting material is rooted in the greenhouse. To do this, an approximately 30-centimeter drainage layer is arranged on the allotted site, on which a 25 cm-thick substrate is laid from the soil with humus in equal proportions. After that, another 5-centimeter layer of coarse clean sand is poured. The scheme for planting cuttings is 7 x 3 cm. The holes are made up to 5 cm deep.

In addition to moistening the substrate in which the cuttings take root, it is also necessary to spray the leaves for 15-20 days. At the same time, in the greenhouse, the thermometer should not fall below + 28 … + 30 degrees C. By the beginning of November, cuttings are removed from the substrate and stored in plastic bags under conditions from 0 to +5 degrees C.
